To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. BARNARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Halstead, in the county of Harvey and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Combined Napkin Ring and Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to combined napkin rings and holders, and more )articularly such as can be easily converter from one form to the other and each of which in general consists of curved resilient members pivotally secured to a common body and having clasps for securing a napkin in place when the device is being used as a holder, and is in posit-ion about the neck of the wearer.

The object of this invention is to provide a combined napkin ring and holder, simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, which can be used to hold a rolled napkin when the latter is not in use, or which can be converted into a holder for securing the napkin in position upon the body of a person during meals.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a perspective view of an embodiment of the device, and shows a napkin held in place on one of the curved members by a clasp when the device is used as a holder; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention, showing the curved members arranged in juxtaposition; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device, showing the latter in the form in which it is used as a napkin ring; and Fig. 4: is a perspective view showing a modified construction of the fastening means.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide a bifurcated body 1, provided with a slot 3. I further provide two curved, resilient members 4 of any suitable material, such as sheet metal, or the like, each of which has an end 5 movably arranged within the bifurcated side of the body 1. Rivets or pins 6 hold these ends pivotally in position. The opposite ends 7 of the curved members are slightly tapered and are outwardly disposed, so as to form hooks 8. The resilient members are further provided with clasps 9, of any suitable material, such as spring metal or the like, which are bent upon themselves and are secured to the members. These clasps serve to hold a napkin 10 or the like in position after it has been passed over the curved members, as shown most clearly in Fig. 1, where the device is illustrated as a holder to be arranged about the neck of the wearer.

hen it is desired to convert the device from a holder to a napkin ring, the members at are moved so that they lie adjacent to one another, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2, then the members are bent upon themselves until the hooks 8 engage the recess 3 of the body, as illustrated in Fig. 3. In the modified form shown in Fig. 4, I provide the body member 4 with studs 10 in place of the slot 3, shown in the other views. Also the ends 7 are not curved into hooks 8, but are provided with eyes 11 near their ends. Each eye has one end 12 enlarged to receive one of the studs 10, the latter, when in place, passing to the opposite end of the eye.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, a body, and curved resilient members pivotally carried by said body and adapted to be arranged in a plurality of positions in one of which they are adjacent to each other, each member having the end remote from said body curved to form a hook, said body having a slot, said slot serving to receive the hooked ends of said members when the latter have been positioned adjacent to one another and have been forced into engagement with said slot.

In a device of the class described, a body having a slot, inwardly curved resilient members pivotally connected with said body, and means for holding a napkin in position on said resilient members, said members having means for engaging said slot when in predetermined positions, whereby a napkin ring is formed.

3.
