WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1909.
Application filed March 25, 1908. Serial No. 423,226.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, VVILLIAM HILLIARD Munro, of the town of Sault Ste. Marie, in the district of Algoma, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches. of which the following is the specification.
My invention, relates to improvements in wrenches, and the object of the invention is to devise a strong and durable wrench ada table for various uses, which will practically automatically adjust itself tothe pipe or nut and when applied will securely grlp the pipe and hold the grip as long as it is being worked and until released.
A further object is to make the wrench readily adjustable for different sizes of pipes andnuts etc. I T
A still further object is to make the wrench of such a form as will effectually preventits being used beyond the strength of its capacity or size.
The invention consists essentially of a wrench comprising an operating bar or member having serrated teeth at the gripping end thereof and a co-acting bar or member having serrated teeth at the grip ing end thereof and forming two jaws and inks connecting the jaws, the parts being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1, is a perspective View of my wrench applied to a pipe. Fig. 2, is a side elevation. Fig. 3, is a detail of the supplemental gripping jaw.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is the long bar or member of my improved wrench, which has a rounded end A,
serrated teeth A at the inside, anenlarge- 1nentA intermediate of its length and the.
major portion thereof tapered. as at A to form a handle.
provided with a rounded outer end B and serrations or teeth B p G are the upper air of llIlkS, whlch are connected by the b0 ts 'or pins Q. and C to the members A and B respectively. The
links C have. extra holes G? for adjustment,
so as to bring the members A and B closer.
together and thereby make narrower jaws. D are the lower pair of links, which are connected to the members A and respecpair 0 tively by bolts 1) and 1). Extra holes D are provided in the links D, so as to provide for drawing the members or bars A and B closer together for the purpose aforesaid.
The air of links C are heavier than the. links D on account of the tensile strength being exerted on the links and the compression stress on the links D.
In order to place my wrench in position upon a pipe or nut or the like it is simply necessary to place the pipe between the jaws formed by the bars A and B and press the bars together and hold them temporarily until a turning pressure is exerted on the handle A when a grip will be immediately established and the pipe or the like may be turned with facility, of course, if the wrench is inverted as shown in the drawing the gravity of the two jaws as they fall together will provide this grip;
I show a supplemental jaw A, which is made of L-shape in cross section and is provided with inner teeth or serrations A and has a dependin portion A", which rests against the shou der or enlargement A of the bar A, so as to take the thrust. A pin or tooth 2 extends through the jaw A and the bar A, and thereby securely holds it in posi tion. It will now be seen that when the jaw A is applied, smaller pipes and nuts may be with facility grasped and turned. By providing several of these supplemental aws with the gripping sides of more or less thickness different sizes of pipes may be gripped with facility. It'must be understood, however, that the size of wrench as shown in- Fig. 1, will grip more than one, size of pipe, it being adapted to grip several sizes, but for very much smaller sizes the supplemental jaw A may be used;
Such a wrench as I have described is simple and cheap to make, very eflicient, very stron and there is nothing liable to 'get out B is the short bar or member, which is end of said grippinfggsurface separating saicl gripping surface in the handle proper sai gripping surface and a portion of the Ii ner-jend ngagmg with one of the teeth en Witnesses:
jenlargement having teeth thereon, a coacting the side of the handle member and a pin seher having a gripping surface, links concuring said depending portion tq the handle meeting sald bars together, a supplemental 'member. 7 jmrhaving teeth thereon and having its in WILLIAM HILLIARD MUN R0. the enlargement, and a dependingside'por- 13.1301 1),
