Description

tnted gieten n.13. sKELLY, or Lockronr, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No.4 93,239, dated August 3, 1869.
IMPROVED RAILWAY-CHAIR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o the same.
To all whom it lmay concern:
Be it known that I, D. B. SKELLY, of Lockport, in the county of Niagara, and State of New York, have invented-a new and improved Railroad-Chair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this'speciiication. p
rlhis invention relates to improvements in railroadcllairs, designed to provide chairs for the better protection of the rails at the ends, to prevent'the pounding and springing common at the ends.
The invention'consists in a peculiar' arrangement in recesses in the outer sides of Ametal chairs,'upon elastic beds, of blocks, to secure the rails and receive the wheels and support them while passing the joints at ghe ends of the rails, as hereinafter more i'ully speci- Figure l represents a plan view of a railroadcl1air, arranged according to my improvement and applied to the rails.
Figure 2 represents a section of the same.
Similar-letters of reference indicate corresponding side of `these recesses, at the top of the chairs, I provide ears, D, to support a key, E.
In the bottom of these recesses, I place a rubber or tise B, andwitha ridge*7 I, fitting alongside of the rails at the ends, the rounded outer edges of which I prefer to Hat-ten for a short distance to allow this edge to fit fairly against them.
'lhese blocks rise from the ends H-.toward the rails, so as to press firmly against the latter when keyed down upon the elastic beds F by the keys E, and serve the double purpose of holding the rails-firmly in the chairs, and taking the weight of the wheels oi' the ends of the rails. The said parts I rising slightly above the tops of thetrails, or being even with them, take sufficient of the weight to prevent them from springing down. lIlhe elevated part-s I of the blocks may be prolonged to any desired extent each way past the ends -K of the walls of the recess in the chairs, but I consider it suficient to make them equal in length to the breadth of the cha-irs.
y Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by lLetters Patent- The combination, with the chairs having the recesses A and mortises B, of the elastic beds F, and the blocks G, having the projections H and elevated ridges I, when arranged and keyed together and against the rails, all substantially as specied.
I). B. SKELLY. I'Vitnesses:
. JOHN GORDON, .I No. Dwyna.
