Letters Patent No. 84,023, dated November 10, 1868.
IMPROVED RAILWAY-CHAIR AND SUPPORT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON VAN GUrsLlNe, of West Albany, in the 4countybf Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad-Chairs and Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and 'exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe ar to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of-tliis specification."

My invention has for its objectto improve the con- Vstruction of railroad-chairs and their supports, so tol furnish a substantial, reliable, and elastic support for the mils, which will hold said rails securely in place, and, at the same time, prevent the jar, now so universally experienced-in railroad-riding; and it consists in the construction of the various parts of the chairs and their supports as lhereinafter more fully described.
A- are the supports, which are made in the form of hollow ironcolumns, closed at the upper or at both ends, and which are securely set in the ground in a vertical position.
If desired, the hollow supports A may be made short, with their lower ends attached to or formed solid with a, hollow metallic bar or tie,'B, which rests upon or is embedded in the ground, as shown in fig. 3.
C are the chairs,` which are made in the form of metallic caps, fitting and resting upon the upper ends of the supports A. j
c' are lips, formed solidly upon the upper side ofthe chairs C, and which overlap the edge of the base-flange upon one side of the rails.,
c2 is a detachable lip, secured to the upper side of the chairs G by key-bolts D, as shown in the drawings, or by other convenient and substantial lmeans.
The opposite chairs are connected to each other by fan iron bar or tie, E, as a guard against the possibility ofthe rails spreading.
In 'the opposite sides ofthe chairs O, just below the p solid top of said chairs, are formed slots, through whi are passed wooden blocks, F, which are thus intel-pos between the solid tops of the chairs C, and the so tops of the supports A, to form an elastic support: the weight of the passing train.

By this construction, by removing the voodenf.blo l, the rubber block G may be removed and re'plzu through the hole or holes in the side or sides of chairs C, without removing ythe chairs C from the s ports A, or disturbing the rails.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by tels Patent, is-

The railroad-chair support, consisting of.' the low supports A, connected bythe tube Bthe cha having the fixed lip c and the detachable lip ci key-bolt D, the rubber block G, the wooden bloc and the connecting-bar E, said chairs being sloth receive the bent ends of the connecting-bar, and fo passage of the wooden blocks, all arranged as desci for the purpose specified.
