C OMB-PROTECT OR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 20, 1908.
Patented Aug. 24, 1909.
Serial No. 463,733.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIA A. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Comb-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toilet articles, and has special reference to a device to be attached to combs.
An object of this invention is to provide a comb with an attachment whereby the teeth on one side of the comb will be protected from breakage during the usage of the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a comb with an attachment of this character which may be reversed to the opposite edge of the comb when necessary in using the teeth upon the opposite edge of the same.
The invention has for a st-ill further object the provision of a device of this character which is of light weight, is durable and strong so that the same can be economically manufactured.
Other' objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a side elevation of a comb having the attachment applied thereto, Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a section on the line 8-3 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a comb of common construction which is pro vided with teeth 11 which are disposed along the opposite edges of the same. The protector comprises a sheet of metal 12 which is curved substantially U-shaped and is of a greater length than the comb 10 for the purpose of admitting of the positioning of ends 13 to inclose the interior of the protector and to prevent the same from longitudinal displacement. The protector is enlarged at its upper portion in order that the operator` may more easily grasp the same and manipulate the comb l0 when placed therein as well as to further the resiliency of the open side of the protector to frictionally engage over the intermediate portion of the comb l0.
In using the protector the comb is inserted in the reduced open side of the same and is frictionally held therein at a distance upon the comb l0 beyond the center thereof. lVhen it is desired to use the edge of the comb which is inclosed by the protector the protector is withdrawn from that edge of the comb and engaged over the opposite edge which will completely cover the teeth upon the opposite edge and prevent the same from breakage during the operation of the comb as the operator engages the hand over the protector to secure a firm hold upon the comb instead of engaging the hand over the teeth upon the opposite edge.
An article of this nature is preferably made from aluminum or other light metal which is strong and durable and which will present a neat appearance.
.Vhat is claimed is A protector for combs comprising a sheet of metal curved substantially U-shaped, said sheet of metal being enlarged in curvature at its central portion and ends secured to the opposite extremities of said sheet of metal for the purpose of closing the same.
In testimony whereof I atliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JULIA A. KENNEDY.
