CLASP.
Application filed September 16, 1908-. Serial No. 453,328.
Specification of Letters Patent. i.
Patented Aug. 17,1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN A. ALBERTONI and ENRICO TROPEANO, citizens of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clasps, and the object is to provide a simple and convenient device by means of which one article may be readily and securely attached to another, as for instance, a purse or napkin to the erson of the owner or user.
Wit the above object in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in Whichy Figure 1 is a side elevation, enlarged, of a clasp constructed in accordance with our invention, the parts being shown in unlocked or unclas ed position; Fig. 2, a side elevation showing t e same locked or clasped, and Fig. 3, a perspective view with the locking-member removed.
Referring now more articularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 esignates the body of the clasp comprising a substantially U- shaped plate, one of the legs of which'is formed intermediately of its ends with an elongated slot 2. Suitably secured at one end to the leg containing the slot 2, is a spring plate 3 the free end of which is bent to extend substantially parallel with the leg to which it is attached. Formed in the free end of this spring-member is a perforation 4 to receive al locking-member which fits loosely therein, said member consisting'of aV head or button 5 'carrying a pointed pin 6 formed intermediately of its ends with laterally-extending lugs or projections 7. The slot 2 is of suiiicient extent to permit the lugs of the locking-member to pass therethrough when they are turned in line with the said slot. For holding the lockingmember with its lugs turned cross-Wise of the slot 2, theunder side of the free end of the s ring-member is formed with grooves or epressions 4 to receive said lugs. The button with its pin is carried by the s ringplate and is normally in the position s own in Fig. l. j
In use the device may be operated in several different Ways. The legs of the U- shaped body may straddle the material of one of the articles, while the other article may be placed between the leg of said body and the spring-plate, the pin being passed through both articles and locked by turning the lugs or projections thereof cross-wise of the slot luntil they rest in the depressions or j grooves 4. Or the clasp may be attached to a garment, and another garment or article c5 attached by Vinserting or buttoning on the head or button 5. For instance, these clasps might be used instead of buttons on the waistband of trousers and the tabs of the Suspenders inserted onv the buttons 5.
The U-shaped plate and the locking-pin and button might be used solely for one article and a spiral device 8 attached to one of the legs of the plate for securing the device to the other article.
Having thus fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
l. A device of the character described comprising a plate having an elongated slot formed therein, a spring member carried by ysaid plate, and a locking-member loosely carried by the free end of said spring-member, said locking-member comprising a head and a pin provided with laterally-extending projections adapted to be turned cross-wise of said slot.
2. A device of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped body portion having an elongated slot formed in one of the legs thereof, a spring-plate secured at one end to the leg having the slot, and a locking-member loosely carried by the free end of the spring-plate comprising a head and a pin having laterally-extending projections adapted to be turned cross-wise of the slot.
3. A device of the character described comprising a body having spaced members, one of which is formed witi an elongated slot, a spring-member carried by the body and .movable at one end to and from the latter, and a locking-member com rising a head carrying a pin formed with a aterallyextending projection adapted to be turned cross-Wise of the slot, said locking-member being loosely carried by the movable endof the spring-member.
4. A device of the character described `comprising a substantially U-shaped body portion having an elongated slot formed inslot and to rest in seid grooves of the spring- 10 one ofthe legs thereof, a, spring-plate secured plate.

grooves extending transversely thereof, and JOHN A. ALBERTONI.
a looking-member loosely carried by the free ENRICO TROPEANO.
end of the spring-plate comprising a heed and e pin having laterally-extending projections adapted to be turned cross-wise of the Witnesses FRANK B. BURCH, CHAs. MOCUSKEY.
