SPUR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. FIELDS, citi- Zen of the United States, residing at TWest Liberty, in the county of Morgan and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spurs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to riding saddles and has particular reference to a spur attachment to be applied to the stirrups of the same.

An object of this invention is to provide a spur which may be secured to a` stirrup and which is adapted to be folded into inoperative position when the same is not to be used, Y

The invention further contemplates the construction of a device of this character which when folded out of operative position will be inclosed in al shield to prevent the engagement of the rowel of the same with the boots or clothing of the rider to prevent the snagging thereof.

The invention has for another object the provision of a spur which is applicable to either the right or to the left stirrup and does not necessitate the special formation of the spur for each side. This enables the sale of spurs of this construction singly and not necessarily in pairs so that it is not necessary to throw to, one side a good spur upon the breakage of the opposite one.

and downwardly to form a shield 13 which is adapted to resiliently engage the upper enlarged end 14 of the arm 11 to tensionally retain the same in a closed position. The enlarged portion 14 is provided with fork arms 15 at its upper extremity between which is rotatively mounted a rowel 16 which is carried with the arm 11 when the same is swung upwardly beneath the shield 18 to cover-the points of the rowel 16 and to prevent the engagement of boots or clothes therewith. The arm 11 is adapted to be swung downwardly in either direction, the motion thereof being limited by stops 17 which are integrally formed upon the lower end of the plate 10 and outwardly extended from the same to engage the opposite edges of the arm 11 according to the direction in lwhich the same is swung downwardly.

For the purpose of securing the plate 10 to a metallic stirrup, which is provided with rounded members, a sleeve 18 is secured intermediately upon the back of the plate 10 by suitable rivets 19, the outer edges of the sleeve 18 being flared for the reception of the portion of the stirrup therebetween when the same is adapted to be closed thereabout to hold the plate 1() rigidly upon the stirrup. The plate 10 is provided with a plurality of apertures 20 for the reception of suitable screws or the like when it is desired to secure the spur upon a wooden stirrup.

It is readily seen that when the plate 10 is positioned upon a stirrup that it is immaterial whether the same is positioned upon the right or the left stirrup as the arm 11 is permitted to swing downwardly in either direction from its normal position beneath the shield 13 and that the arm 11 is retained in a substantially horizontal position by means of the stops 17 which engage therewith to limit the downward movement of the same. The rowel 16 is incased between the upper end of the plate 10 and shield 13 so that articles of clothing or boots are prevented from engagement therewith and the arm 11 is retained in such upper position by means of the tensional engagement of the shield 13 with the enlarged portion 14 thereof.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is2- 1. A spur as specified comprising a plate, a shield integrally formed upon the upper end of the plate, an arm pivotally mounted upon the lower end of said plate and adapted to swing upwardly beneath said shield, a rowel to imit the downward motion of said arm.

A spur as specified comprising a plate, means carried by said late to secure the same to a stirrup, a shield carried by said plate andformed by the overturned upper extremity of the same, an arm pivotally mounted at the lower end of said plate and adapted to swing upwardly beneath said shield, an enlarged outer end on said arm to frietionally engage with said shield, fork arms Jformed on said enlarged end, a rowel mounted betweensaid fork arms and stops integrally formed with said plate at the lower edge thereof to limit the downward movement of said arm.

5. A spur as specified Comprising a plate, means carried by said plate for securing the same upon the stirrup, an arm pivotally mounted upon the lower end of said plate to swing in opposite directions therefrom, stops carried upon the lower corners of' said plate to limit the downward movement of said arm and a rowel disposed in the outer end of said 1 arm.
