CHECKRElNnHOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,194, dated July 3, 1900. Application filed May 9,1899. 4Serial No. 716,082. (No model.)
Z'o @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. BERK- STRESSER, a citizen of the United States, residing atYork,in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CheckreinIIooks for Harness, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to checkrein-hooks for harness; and its object is to provide a device of this character which will permit a ready engagement of the checlrrein therewith and effectually prevent an accidental disengagement of the rein.
The novel features of the device will be fully described hereinafter and defined in the appended claim, in connection with the accom panying drawings, in which- Figure lis a View in perspective of a checkrein-hook embodying the invention, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
"` The reference-numeral l designates a base or frame cast in a single piece and having an Yintegral loop 2 at vits rear end.
form this frame with downwardly curved I preferably sides 3 and an upwardly-curved and rounded rear end i to give the ornamental appearance of a miniature saddle, although of course this specific contour is not essential.
5 designates the hook proper, the lower end of which extends under the front end of the base or frame, where it is secured by a bolt G, passing through the frame and hook, as shown, and securedby a nut 7. lThe upper end or head 8 of the bolt is provided with integral parallel lugs or ears 9, between which is pivotally secured an angle-lever l0, the pivotal support being located at the angle of the lever. The short arm 1l of this lever l0 is curved forwardly and adapted to contact with the under side of the rearwardly-extending curved arm l2-of the hook. The long. arm
13 of the angle-lever terminates in a head or enlargement 14, which serves as a weight to normally hold the short arm 11 against the hook, and thus prevent the checkrein afterits engagement with the hook from slipping out.
It will be clear from the drawings that the checkreiu can be easily slipped into the hook, 5o
sition, thus closing the hook and preventing the slipping out of the rein until the anglelever is again tilted by hand.
I deem it important that the curved arm l2 of the hook extend over the angle-lever, as
shown, to such an extent that the weighted 6o end 14 thereof will strike the under side of said hook-arm when the rein is inserted, so as to stop the downward movement of the short arm of said lever and prevent the same from being thrown downward to such an eX- tent as to throw the weighted arm beyond the center of gravity, so that as soon as the rein has passed the free end of the short arm the weighted arm will immediately return the angie-lever to its normal position.
The improved checkrein-hook herein described, comprising a base or frame, a hook having one end extended beneath said frame and its other end extended over the same, a vertically-disposed bolt passed through the frame and having upon its lower end a nut bearing upon the under side of the lower portion of the hook and provided at its upper end with ears, and an an gie-lever pivotally mounted between said ears with a normally vertically disposed curved short arm engaging the under side of the upper portion of the hook, and its longer arm weighted and disposed beneath said upper portion of the hook and adapted to contact therewith to limit the downward movement of the curved short arm of the lever, all substantially as herein shown and described. f
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT II. BERKSTRESSER.
