To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, KNo'wLEs EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eureka, in the county of Humboldt and Stateof California, have invented a new and useful Folding Bed, of which the following is a of the bed when the latter is in horizontal position.

Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being un-' derstood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a per spective view of a folding bed constructed in accordance with my invention, the bed being shown in horizontal or operative position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the bed in full lines in open position and in dotted lines in vertical or closed position. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view.

The improved folding bed forming the subj ect matter of the present invention is shown housed Within the recess 5 of a partition wall 6, the latter being provided with a frame 7 surrounding the recess so as to give an ornamental finish to the bed when the latter is in both open and closed positions.

Disposed within the recess 5 are transverse bars 8 on which are pivotally mounted the adjacent ends of substantially horizontally disposed levers 9, the opposite ends of which are pivotally connected at 10 with the side rails of the bed, indicated at 11, thereby to permit the bed to be folded laterally within the seating recess when not in use.

Secured to the bottom of the bed are spaced transverse brackets 12 which form feet or supports for the bed when the latter is in horizontal position and also form shelves when the bed is in vertical position, as indi cated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawmgs.

Pivotally mounted at 13 on the side walls of the recess 5 are diagonally disposed suspension levers 14 the lower ends of which are pivotally connected at 15 with the side rails of the bed, while the upper ends thereof are pivotally connected through the medium of short links 16 with vertically disposed panel supporting levers 17. The upper ends of the levers 17 are curved outwardly and pivotally connected at 18 with a movable section or panel 19 which latter forms a partial closure for the recess 15 when the bed is in horizontal position and is movable laterally within the recess when the bed is moved to vertical or inoperative position.

Extending transversely across the seating recess 5 above the brackets 8 are weight supporting bars 20 each having one end thereof pivoted at 21 to the rear wall of the recess and its opposite end pivoted at 22 to a weight receiving box or receptacle 23 preferably disposed parallel with the inner wall of the recess, as shown. The lower .end of the boX or receptacle 23 is arranged above the top of the frame 7 and secured to the opposite sides of said box are depending bars 2lhaving their lower ends pivotally connected at 25 with the intermediate portion of the adjacent levers 9 so that when an initial upward movement is imparted to the free end of the bed the weight of the boX 23 will press downwardly on the levers 9 and assist in moving the bed to vertical or inoperative position. It will thus be seen that when the bed is swung upwardly within the recess 5 the suspension levers 14 will be moved to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings and through the medium of the connection links 16 tilt the levers 17 downwardly and rearwardly within the recess, said levers carrying with them the panel section 19 so as to permit the bed to enter the recess and in which position it will be effectually housed so as not to offer any obstruction to the floor space. When the bed is moved to open or horizontal position the forward ends of the levers 9 together with the weight receiving receptacle 24 will be elevated, while at the same time the levers 14 will be moved to the full line position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thus causing the links 16 to swing the levers 17 carrying the panel 19 toward the face of the partition and in which position the panel 19 will not only form a partial closure for the recess 5 put also form in effect the head board of the While I have shown and described the bed mounted in the partition of a building it is obvious that the same may be used with equally good results in connection with a cabinet, casing or other movable support.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:

1. The combination with a support having a seating recess, of a bed movable to vertical position within the recess, a panel operatively connected with the bed and forming the head board of the latter when the bed is in a horizontal position, and a counter weight disposed within the recess and having its upper portion pivotally connected with the support and its lower portion operatively connected with the bed.

The combination with a support having a seating recess, of a bed movable to vertical position within the recess, levers forming a pivotal connection between the bed and support, a panel operatively connected with the bed and forming the head board of the latter when the bed is in horizontal position, and a counter weight suspended within the recess and resting on the levers.

5. The combination with a support having a seating recess, of a bed movable to vertical position within the recess, levers forming a pivotal connection between the support and bed, diagonally disposed levers pivotally connected with the bed and having their intermediate portions pivotally mounted 011 the support, a movable panel section, levers pivotally connected with the panel section, and links connecting the diagonal levers and panel supporting levers.

6. The combination with a support having a seatim recess, of a bed movable to vertical position within the recess, levers forming a pivotal connection between the support and bed, a panel section operatively connected with the bed and forming the head board of the latter when the b ed is in horizontal position, a counter balance disposed within the recess and operatively connected with the levers, and feet depending from the bottom. of the bed and forming shelves when the bed is in vertical position.

7. The combination with a support having a seating recess, of a bed movable to vertica position within the recess, substantially horizontally disposed levers forming pivotal connections between the bed and support, diagonally disposed levers pivotally c011- nected with the side rails of the bed and having their intermediate portions pivotally mounted on the support, a movable panel section, levers pivotally mounted on the support and having their upper ends curved laterally and pivotally connected with the panel, links forming a pivotal connection between the diagonal levers and panel supporting levers, a weight receiving receptacle arranged within the recess and provided with depending bars pivotally connected with the horizontal levers, and spaced bars forming a pivotal connection between the receptacle and support.
