COMBINED STOOL AND COAT-HANGER.
Application filed July 1. 1918.
To all whom it may/concern:
Be it known that I, PITER BAss, a. subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of 'lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Stools and Coat- I-Iangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in articles of furniture particularly those adapted to be used to sit upon.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a stool or stand of triangular cross section, resting upon three points of support, the upper portion of the stand being so arranged as to be used as a receptacle for various articles of clothing, as hats, coats, rubbers, over-shoes, etc.
A further object is to providemeans, combined with the stand, whereby a coat may be supported in such manner as to maintain its shape, the coat, like the other articles, being contained within a compartment formed in the upper part of the structure.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing an article of furniture made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, parts being shown in a. raised or extended position, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 1.
The stand comprises three triangular posts or supports 10, between which extend the side walls 11, from a point level with the tops of the posts downward to a flooring 12, forming a triangular compartment covered by a seat 14, engaged by the hinges 15, and connected with a cross strip 16 at what may be considered the back of the structure.
Arranged centrally within the triangular compartment, and extending vertically upward therein, is a column 18, having a central opening 19, the column being supported by brackets 20, secured to the floor 12 of the structure.
Passing through the lower or inner side of the seat element 14 is a bracket 22, and pivotally secured by the pin 23 therein, is a curved arm 24, having a plurality of teeth 25 Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Jan.'7, 1919.
Serial No. 242.955.
upon its outer, arcuate surface, the teeth being operatively engaged with teeth of a ratchet wheel 27, rotatably mounted on a .is engaged a pinion 31 meshing with the teeth of a pinion 32, fixed on the spindle 28, alongside the ratchet wheel 27, the teeth of the pinion 31, meshing with a rack 34 formed with a bar 33, movable vertically within the opening 19 in the column 18, this bar being of such length as to be contained entirely within the compartment formed in the upper portion of the structure.
Secured to the upper end of the movable bar 33 is a transverse, curved bar 35 made in the usual form of a coat hanger and adapted to receive coats or like garments in an obvious manner. From theconstruction herewith described it will be obvious that when the seat 14 is raised, thehanger element 35 willbe correspondingly raised, due to the rack and gear mechanism intervening.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a neat appearing and commodious article of furniture has been described, particularly adapted for use of draughtsmen or others who are enabled to dispose of articles of personal outer wear and-place them securely in the compartments formed in the upper portion of the stool or stand described and which may be used by them for the usual purposes of a stool.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. In a combined stool and coat hanger, the combination with a triangular frame having three points of support and a chamber formed in the upper end thereof, of a column rigidly supported in said chamber,
a rack bar slidable within said column, a-
curved coat hanger integral at the upper end of said rack bar, a triangular seat hinged along one of its edges at the upper portion of said frame, a curved arm hingedly engaged with the lower side of said seat, said curved arm having ratchet teeth upon its ex-- terior edge, a ratchet wheel engageable with the teeth of said arm, a pinion engageable with the teeth on said slidable bar, and connections between said ratchet Wheel and pinions, whereby said slidable bar is raised and lowered coincidently with the raising and lowering of said seat.
In a stand the combination With three upright posts and plate elements engaging therebetween, of a floor connecting between said plate elements at their lower edges forming a triangular compartment, a cover adapted'to be used as a seat hingedly engaged with said. structure at the upper edge thereof, a column supported centrally on said floor, a bar slidable Within said column, said bar having'a transverse element adapted to act as a coat hanger, a curved arm pivoted to the lower side of said cover, teeth formed upon the outer edge of said curved Copiesof this patent maybe obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, I). 0.
arm, a ratchet Wheel rotatably mounted at the top of said column, the teeth of said arm being operatively engaged With the teeth of said ratchet Wheel, rack teeth formed upon one side of said slidable bar, a pinion operable by said ratchet Wheel, and a second pinion driven by the first named pinion, meshing With the teeth formed upon said slidable bar whereby the same is caused to be raised or lowered as said seat is raised or lowered.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature. 7
