LEGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Application filed. April 8, 1909. Serial No. 488,637.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN Sauces, Lox- NIE P. TUCKER, and VIRGIL A. 001), citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Springfield, Greene county, Missouri, at Stringtown, Atoka county, Oklahoma, and at Columbia, Boone county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening means for leggings so formed that they may be easily and expeditiously put 011 and taken off. For this purpose, a bifurcated fasteningstra-p is provided, the ends of the bi furcations being attached to a lapping portion of the legging at or near the top and bottom edges thereof. The strap is wound around the legging, and the single free end IS secured to a single buckle or other suitable fastening device. The bifurcations of the strap are so formed and disposed that they do not have a tendency to exert a longitudinal strain or pull on the overlapping portion of the legging, as in the case of a bifurcated strap of the usual formation, and, therefore, they do not have a tendency to cause that portion to rise and pucker between the places of attachment. The advantages of a bifurcated strap with a single free end to be buckled are retained without the disadvantages hitherto pertaining to such a strap.
The invention also provides simple and eflicient means for preventing the working up and down of the lapping portions of the logging while in use, the arrangement being such that the adjustability of the article to the wearer is not interfered wit-h by this means.
A legging formed in accordance with this invention may be made of leather, canvas, or other suitable material, it is adjustable both at the top and bottom, it possesses a neat appearance, and it may be put on and taken oif with celerity by the operation of one buckle only.
When read in connection with the description herein, the details and arrangement of parts contemplated by this invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein a preferable embodiment of the invention is disclosed, for purposes of illustration.
Like reference-characters refer to corresponding parts in the views of the drawings, of which Figure 1 is a view of the legging and attaching-strap in open or distended position; Fig. 2 is a view of the legging in the position assumed when in use; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view, on the line z.a, Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, d designates the body portion of a legging, which may be of leather, canvas, or other suitable material.
For securing the legging in a closely-fitted position 011 the leg of a wearer, the invention provides a strap formed with bifurcated portions 5 and 6, which merge into a single free end portion 7. The portions 5 and (3 are attached at or near, respectively, the top and bottom of the legging, at or near the edge of a lapping part thereof; and the strap is wound around the legging and engaged with a buckle or other fastening member 8 to hold the legging in place.
The strap is so formed or cut out in the making that the bifurcations, one above and one below the calf of the leg, extend straight away from the overlapping part of the legging for a considerable portion of their disposition around the body of the legging, and then they converge until they meet and merge into the single free end portion 7. The upper bifurcation is made longer than the lower to allow for the greater circumference of the upper part of the leg. This arrangement of the bifurcations is made so that there is only straight or transverse pull of the strap on the lapping part of the legging, thereby avoiding the tendency of that part between the places of strap attachment to rise or pucker and destroy the neat appearance of the article and impair its utility. In the case of a strap having bifurcations one or both of which extend obliquely directly from a lapping part of a legging to the point of merger into the single free end, there is caused by such convergence a longitudinal strain in the legging which results in its rising or puckering up, and it is to avoid this occurrence that the bifurcations of the strap contemplated by this invention are extended straight away from the lapping part of the legging. The strap, when the legging is being drawn close to the leg and thereafter while on, lies close to the body of the legging, and the tendency of the bifurcations to straighten out or draw to? gether between their points of attachment and their merger into the single free end is counteracted by their positions close tothe body of the legging, above and below the calf. of the leg, the shape of theleg a lse con..- tributing in the prevention of the straightening out of the bifurcations and in the avoidance of the imposition of longitudinal strain on the legging.
Both of the bifurcated portions of the strap may be attached to the lapping part of the legging by stitching or both by buckles. The invention. however, contemplates the stitching of the lower bifurcation 6 and attaching the upper bifurcation 5 by a buckle 9 near the top of the legging where it is out of the way.
When the legging is to be fastened on the leg of the wearer, the strap is wrapped around the legging and the single free end drawn through the buckle 8 until the bifurcation which is stitched to the legging, the lower one in the present. instance, draws the lower part of the legging close to the leg. Then, the single free end being fastened, the buckled bifurcated end, the upper one in the present instance, is tightened in its buckle 9 and the part of the legging. to which it is connected drawn close to theleg. The buckled bifurcated end having been ad.- justed to the size of thewea-rer, thereafter it is unnecessary to change its adjustment in taking off and putting on the leggings, for the single free end of the strap through buckle 8 is then only used in drawing tight on both bifurcations.
The particular form of strap provided by this invention is not only useful on leather leggings, but also 011 canvas or other leggings made with stiffeningstays, because any stay suiiiciently resilient to avoid discomfort to the wearer is not sufficiently rigid to prevent the rising or puckering caused by a strap with directly-converging bifurcations.
In order to prevent relative longitudinal movement or working up and down, with the consequent discomfort and rubbing and wearing, betweenthelapped portions of the legging, one of the laps, preferably the outer, is formed with a transverse slot 10, preferably near the top. Attached to the other lapped portion, in a corresponding.position, is a staple or other suitable projection 11. which is arranged to project into the slot 10 when the legging is lapped on the leg of the wearer, the slot/being sufficiently long to permit the required movement between the lapped parts in drawing the one over the other in adjusting the legging in place. lVith a projection associated with a longitudinal slot no such adjustability is permitted.
Having thus described our invention, what we ClH'lHIaS new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l n a legging, a strap-a ttaching m unber secured to one of the meeting portions thereof. a buckle secured tothe other meeting portion at a place removed from the strapattachingmember, and a strap arranged to be passed around the-legging to hold it in place and formed with bifurcations one adapted toengage said buckle and the other arranged to be secured on the same meeting portion as the buckle at a point on the other side of said strap-attaching member and each bifurcation extending straight away from said latter portion part of the distance around the legging and then converging into a single free end adapted to be adjustably fastened by said strap-attaching member.
in testimony whereof, we affix our signatures in the-presence of witnesses.
