CHAIR-STRAP FOR HOLDING BABIES.

T all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that I, h IARTIIA L. Linema- TON, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Chair- Straps for Holding Babies, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in chair straps for holding a baby, and the objects of my invention. are simplicity and economy in construction and efficiency and safety in use.

In the accompanying drawingz I iguro 1 is a perspective View of my chair strap for holding a baby apphedto a chair seat. Fig.

2 is a perspective view on a reduced scale of my invention applied to holding a baby in a high chair.

By the use of my invention a baby may be held in place in the seat of a high chair securely and safely against falling out or squirming out and consequent liability of accident and injury, and without undue restriction in the movements or other inconvenience to the baby, all as will be hereinaf ter described.

In the accompanying drawings 3 is a waist belt for passing around the body of the baby at the waist, provided at its ends with a buckle 4 and holes 5, for adjustment to fit the waist of the baby, said buckle being preferably located at one side. Attached to the lower edge at the rear and spread apart a little, are two safety strap branch buckles 6.

7 is the safety strap, loosely attached to the front of the waist belt3,by threading the said waist belt 3 through the slip loop 8 at the front end of the said safety strap 7. Below said slip loop 8 the safety strap 7 is provided with a take up device comprising a series of holes 9 in the safety strap 7 and. a take up buckle 10 attached to the inner face of the safety strap 7, the front end of the said strap being slipped through the buckle 10, as shown. Below the said take up device the safety strap 7 passes down and back underneath the seat with which it is to be used. Such a seat, suitable for a baby for which my invention is adapted, would ordinarily be provided with side arms and back, supported by uprights. In Fig. 1 one such upright 12 is shown projecting upward from the back of the seat 11 at or adjacent to the middle. At some point toward the rear of the seat 11 the Specification of Letters Patent.

safety strap 7 divides into two safety strap branches 13, respectively right and left, which pass upward. from the back of the seat 11, andv forward, one each side of the seat upright 12 up to the safety strap branch buckles 6, at the rear of the waist belt 7, to which they are connected by means of bu ckle holes 14 in their ends, inclosing said seat up right 12 in a triangle composed. of the two safety strap branches 13 and the waist belt 3. In case there is any slack in the safety strap when taken up by the buckle 10, the same may project forward in the form of a loop, as 15, Fig. 1.

The manner of applying the device described for holding ababy in a seat, is as follows :The ends of the waist belt 3 are run buckled and the slip loop 8 is slipped off from the waist belt 3. After the baby is placed in the seat, the front end of the safety strap 7 is brought upward between the legs of the baby, the slip loop Sis again slipped onto the waist belt 3, the safety strap branches 13 are located at the back so as to spread substantially equally to each side, the slip loop Sis brought to a position in the middle at the front, the ends of the Waist belt 3 are adjusted to fit the waist of the baby and the said ends are buckled by means of the buckle 4 and the series of holes 5. Finally, adjust ment of the safety strap is made either by means of the take up device in front of the safety strap 7 or of the safety strap branches 13 and the buckles 6, or both, in case any such adjustment is found necessary.

Even though the adjustments described are loosely made, danger of slipping out of the strap or off from the seat is obviated by the safety strap in combination with the belt strap and seat as described in any position the baby may assume, so long as the chair is maintained in its normal upright position, the reliance for safety resting in the fact that the safety strap is made in one piece.

It is apparent that some changes from the specific construction herein disclosed may be made and therefore I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form of construction shown and described, but desire the liberty to make such changes, in working my invention, as may fairly come within the spirit and scope of the same.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a strap for holding a baby in a seat, a waist belt for passing around thebody and a safety strap for passing underneath the said seat, the said strap being connected by one end to the waist belt at the back in the rear of the said seat and by the other end to the front of the said belt in front of the said seat.

2. In a strap for holding a baby in a seat, a waist belt for passing around the body and a safety strap for passing underneath the said seat, the said strap being removably attached by one end to a fixed point at the back of the waist belt and adjustably attached to the front by means of a loop in the end of the safety strap through which the waist belt is threaded for varying laterally the point of attachment thereto.

3. In combination, a waist belt and a safety strap, said waist belt adapted to be socured around a babys waist and to receive the ends of said safety strap, said safety strap integral from end to end, adapted to pass under a chair seat, having its ends secured to said waist belt, and provided with take up means intermediate the said ends.

4. In combination, a waist belt and a safety strap, the said waist belt adapted to be secured around a babys waist and to receive the ends of the said safety strap, the said safety strap having a single front end, a fork at the rear so as to form two back ends, integral between the said ends, adapted to pass underneath a chair seat, and to receive a chair upright Within the said fork at the rear,

and attached by its ends to the said waist belt.

5. In a strap for holding a baby in a seat, a Waist belt provided with means for connecting its ends and a safety strap divided at the rear end into two branches, the ends spread apart and attached at two fixed points to the middle portion of the waist belt at the rear and having its other end adjustably secured and arranged to slip laterally on the said waist belt at its middle front portion, the said safety strap with its ends thus secured being also provided with a take up device for taking up the portion of the said safety strap between the said ends.

6. A high chair strap for holding ababy in a chair comprising a waist belt having means for securing it around the waist, and a safety strap having two branches at one end by means of which branches it is secured to the waist belt at the back and forms with a portion of the waist belt a triangular opening for receiving an upright on the chair while the front end of the said safety strap is detachably secured to the waist belt at the front and a portion of the safety strap between the said ends passes underneath the chair seat.
