BATH-TUB ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed September 2, 1908. Serial No. 451,371.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. SHIPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bremerton, in the county of Kitsap, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tub Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is a bath tub attachment for holding and supporting young infants while being bathed, the object being to hold the infant in a sitting position so that the nurse or mother may have both hands free, instead of having to hold and support the child with one hand while bathing it with the other.
The invention, briefly described, comprises a looped band which is attached to the sides of the tub and carries a pair of slides, by means of which the loop may be adjusted in point of size, so as to fit the body of the child to be bathed, the attachment of the band to the tub serving to hold the child in the proper position.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.
Of the said drawings, Figure l is a plan View, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a View taken transversely through Fig. 1, on the line 22. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of one of the slides.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 designates, generally, the tub and 6 the band, which latter is formed of flannel, muslin or any other suitable soft fabric, and has its ends buckled together, as indicated by the numeral 10. The band is attached to the tub by means of a pair of hooks 7, whose bill portions 8 are fitted over the rim of the tub, as shown in Fig. 2, each bill being formed with an opening through which the stem of a set screw 9 extends, the free ends of the stems impinging against the outer face of the side wall of the tub, so as to hold the hooks securely in place. The depending stem of each hook is slotted longitudinally,
as indicated by the numeral 13, the band being passed through these slots prior to the buckling together of its ends.
The band carries a pair of slides 11, which are arranged in spaced relation to each other, so as to provide therebetween a loop portion 14, the sides of the loop being separated at their ends by reason of their passage through the two longitudinal slots 12 formed in each slide. The provision of these two slides obviously serves to permit of the loop being expanded or contracted at will, according as they are moved from or toward each other. In use, the band with its slides is attached to the hooks, as above described, after which the body of the baby is passed through the loop and is held securely in a sitting position by tightening the loop to the requisite extent, which action is accomplished by moving the slides toward each other, as will be apparent.
The holder herein described, is extremely simple in its construction, and can therefore be manufactured at a very low cost. It can be readily applied to and removed from the baby and it can be quickly adjusted to the requisite size. Its position with respect to the tub is likewise adjustable, since the hooks may be moved to any desired points upon the rim of the tub.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination, with a bath tub, of a pair of oppositely-located hooks having their bills engaged with the rim of the tub and their stems slotted, of a doubled band extending across the tub and passed through the slots in said stems, said band being provided with an adjustable loop adapted to support the body of the bather between the members thereof.
2. The combination, with a bath tub, of a pair of oppositely-located hooks having their bills fitted over the rim of the tub, and their stems extending toward the bottom of the tub and formed with longitudinal slots; a doubled band of soft textile fabric extending across the tub and passed through said slots; and a pair of spaced slides carried by said band and movable thereupon toward and from each other, to form a loop of variable size arranged to support the body of the bather between the members thereof.
3. The combination, with a bath tub, of a pair of oppositely-located hooks having their I ing through the opening in the bills, to hold 10 bills fitted over the rim of the tub, and their the hooks in adjusted position. stems extending toward the bottom of the In testimony whereof, I affix my signaturq tulb, each billdllneing formed Wit?) an opening in presence of two witnesses.
5 a an eXten ing across the tu and secure w to the stems of the hooks, said'band being EDWARD bun provided with an adjustable loop arranged Vitnesses: to support the body of the bather between J. M. SINCLAIR, the members thereof; and set screws eXtend- L. L. VVILsoN.
