Description
V. B. GILUAM/ BABY WALKER.
APPLICATION FILED MR. 30. 191.5.
1,193.,37 Patented Aug. 1, 1916.
aid/OW Vim/u 6171/0 m VIOLA B. GILLIAM, OF THURMOND, WEST VIRGINIA.
BABY-WALKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A11 1, 1916.
Application filed March 30, 1915. Serial No. 18,055.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VIOLA B. GILLIAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thurmond, in the county of Fayette and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby- Walkers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to baby walkers, designed for the purpose of sustaining the weight of a child in order to assist it in learning to walk, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a simple contrivance in the form of a waist belt, shoulder straps connecting the waist belt, arm pit supports and a suspending strap for a person to sustain the weight of the child in upright position while it is learning to walk.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a baby walker made in accordance with this invention and shown in use, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the baby walker disconnected from the user.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a comparatively wide waist belt having a buckle 2 at one end and a series of perforations 3 at the opposite end to render the waist belt adjustable around the child. Shoulder straps 4 are connected at their ends at relatively spaced distances apart to the waist belt 1 and are of a length to pass over the shoulders and fit snugly thereon. Connected to the shoulder straps in front is a short section or brace 5, which are extended at each end to form the strap sections 6 and 7 which pass rearwardly under the arm pits of the child, the strap 6 being provided with a buckle 8 and the strap 7 being provided with perforations 9. A short strap 10 is connected at its ends to the strap 6 and to the waist belt 1, said strap 10 extending from the. strap 6 to the belt 1- in the rear of the arm of the shoulder strap. A similar strap 11 is connected at one end to the strap 7 and at the opposite end to the waist belt 1 being on the opposite side of the back of the wearer. Suspending straps 12 and 13 are connected at one of their ends to the short sections 10 and 11, intermediate the ends thereof, said strap 12 being provided with a buckle 14, and said strap 13 being provided with perforations 15 to permit the adjustment of the suspending straps 12 and 13.
The device is applied to the child as shown in Fig. 1, the shoulder straps 4 passing over the shoulders and the waist belt 1 being adjusted firmly around the waist and the suspending strap 12-13 is grasped by the person for teaching the child to walk.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a baby walker made in accordance with this invention is inexpensive to manufacture and is a reliable appliance for giving the child confidence in its ability to walk, and in a short time the child will learn to walk and the baby walker may be removed.
Various changes may be made in the detail of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A baby walker provided with a waist belt, shoulder straps connected to the waist belt at relatively spaced distances apart, a front strap connected to the inner arms of said shoulder straps and extending outwardly beyond the same, said strap passing under the arm pits of a child and fastened in the rear of the back thereof, vertical straps connected to the waist belt and the front strap, means on the ends of said front straps for adjusting the same and suspend ing straps connected to said vertical straps intermediate their ends and provided with buckles for adjusting the same.
2. A baby walker comprising a waist belt, shoulder straps connected thereto, a front strap connected between the shoulder straps, adjustable straps connected to opposite sides of the shoulder straps, means on the ends of said adjustable straps for securing the same In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VIOLA B. GILLIAM.
Witnesses:
WALTER PERKINS, ROBERT GILLIAM.
