Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, '1919.
Application filed November 17, 1916. Serial No. 131,976.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, ANGr'iLn MAROELLE DUNNING, a citizen of the United States, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Stra for Babies, of which the following is a ull, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved safety strap for babies arranged to permit a person to properly and safely'suspend or hold up a baby to allow the latter to walk without undue strain on the legs, or to securely hold the infant in a baby carriage, chair or the like without carriage or off the chair, at the same time allowing the baby considerable freedom of movement such as safely sit-ting down, standing-up or leaning over. Another object is to provide a safety strap which is i very simple and durable in construction and which can be easily applied or removed.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment'of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,
applied for holding a baby safely in a' chair;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the safety strap with the holding straps removed; and
Fig. 5is a side elevation of one of the holding straps.
On a breast band 10, of leather or other suitable pliable material, are secured the ends of two shoulder straps 11 spaced apart and adapted to be passed under the arms of the baby and then over the shoulders to be attached at their free ends to buckles 12 secured to the straps 11 at the breast band 10. The free ends of the shoulders straps 11 are provided with the usual rows of apertures 13 to permit of conveniently adjus'ting the shoulder straps on the buckles 12 to fit the baby on which the safety strapre 1 is a perspective. view of the for babies as applied for safely is used at the time. 7 It will be noticed that by this adjustment of the shoulder straps '11 the breast band 10 is held in the proper position across the breast of the baby, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The shoulder straps 11 are connected with each other by a back strap 14, preferably made in sections fastened together by a buckle 15.
The back strap 14; is disposed approximately parallel with the breast band 10 and is spaced such'a distance from the latter that the back strap extends across the back of the baby at the back of the shoulders, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3.
The ends of the breast band 10 are provided with loops 20 holding rings 21 adapted to be engaged by snap hooks 22, each held on the end of a holding strap 23 provided adjacent the snap hook 22 with a buckle 24 engaged by the free end of the strap 23 to form the holding strap 23 into a loop or a handle. The free end of each holding strap '23 is provided with a row of apertures for engagement with the tongue of the buckle 24 to permit of lengthening or shortenin the loop formed by the holding strap. t will be noticed that the holding straps 23 may be readily attached to parts of a baby carriage at' the 'o posite sides thereof to secure y hold the Baby in the carriage but to allow free movement .of the baby with a view to permit the bab to stand up or lean over without danger o ofthe carriage.
As shown in Fig. 2, the holding straps 23 form convenient handles for a person to take hold of with one hand with a view to properly support the baby while the latter walks, thus relieving the legs of the baby of undue strain.
It will further be noticed that the holding straps 23 can be attached to the side arms of a chair, as shown in Fig. 3 to hold the baby in position on the chair but to allow the baby falling out Y it to sit down or stand up or lean over sidewise without danger of the baby falling off of the chair.
It is understood that by the arrangement described the breast strap 10 in conjunction with the shoulder straps 11, the back strap 14 and the holding straps 23 form an absolutely safe harness for holding the child in position, at the same time allowing the baby considerable freedom of -movement without danger of falling out of the carriage or chair, or when walking. It will be noticed that as the breast strap 10 engages the breast ofwthe baby and not the waist or abdomen no undesirable strain is exerted on such delicate parts as the waist and abdomen.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent a 1. A safety strap for babies, comprising a breast band, adjustable approximately parallel shoulder straps attached to the said breast band at opposite sides of the middle of the said breast, band and connected with each other by aback strap, each shoulder strap when closed forming a complete loop with both ends of the shoulder strap located at the front of the breast band, and holding straps connected with the ends of the said breast band.
2. A safety strap for babies, comprising a breast band of unbroken continuity, approximately parallel shoulder straps each provided at one end Witha buckle, the buckle end being attached to the said breast band and the free end of each strap being adapted to be fastened in place by the buckle, each shoulder strap when closed forming a complete loop with both ends of the shoulder strap located at the front of the breast band, aback strap connecting the said shoulder straps with each other, and holding straps detachably connected with the ends of the said breast band.
3. A safety strap for babies, comprising abreast band of unbroken continuity provided at its ends with rings, approximately parallel shoulder. straps each provided at.
one end with a buckle, the buckle end of a shoiilder strap being attached to the said breast band and the free end of a shoulder stra by tile corresponding buckle, to form a 100 with both ends of the shoulder strap located at the front of the breast band, an adjustable back strap connecting the shoulder straps with each other, and holding straps each provided at one end with a snap hook and a buckle, the snap hook engaging a corresponding ring of the breast band and the free end of a holding strap being fastened in place by the corresponding buckle.
fl. A safety strap for babies, comprising a single breast band of a length to extend slightly beyond the sides of the body, adjustable shoulder straps fixed with buckles at one end to said breast band at opposite sides of the middle, and formin fiat nonbuckling approximately parallel oops, connected with each other by a back strap, the free endsof said shoulder straps bein secured in said buckles for manipulation rom the front; and holding straps includin connecting means therefor to the ends or said breast band.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
