BELLE O. OALLENDER, OF BERROS, CALIFORNIA.
THIMB LE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1909.
Application filed September 5, 1908. Serial No. 451,883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BELLE C. CALLENDER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Berros, in the county of San Luis Obispo and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thimbles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in thimbles and more particularly to an attachment therefor adapted to pull bastings and cut threads.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in construction and very effective for the purposes intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whieh Figures 1 and 2 are front and side views of a thimble having the invention applied thereto; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View through the portion of the thimble showing the construction and arrangement of the basting puller and thread cutter; and Fig. at is a detail section taken on the plane in dieated by the line 4;-4l in Fig. 3.
In the drawings 1 denotes a thimble of any form and construction and 2 denotes the invention which is soldered or otherwise secured at a suitable point upon one side of the thimble. It is in the form of a plate disposed radially with respect to the thimble and having an enlarged base portion 3 and a downwardly or inwardly extending hook 4. The upper and inner portion of the latter is substantially semi-circular to form an open eye or loop 5 and its lower end is tapered to a blunt extremity G and is circular or of oval shape in cross section, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4. This hook is adapt-- ed to be used in pulling basting threads and owing to its peculiar shape it will be seen that it may be elieetively used for this purpose. The base portion 3 of the plate has an angular lower end 7, the edge of which is beveled in opposite directions to form a thread cutting edge or blade 8. This cutting edge or blade extends upwardly and outwardly from the body of the thimble to the open portion of the eye 5 and while a thread may be readily pressed against it and severed, its peculiar shape and disposition will not interfere with the use of the hook as a basting puller.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention is effective for the purposes mentioned and that it may be produced and applied to ordinary thimbles at a small cost.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
A thimble comprising a body and the plate or blade 2 projecting from one side of the body and shaped to provide the downwardly extending tapered hook et and the open eye 5, the edges of a portion of the hook forming the eye 5 and also of the tapered end of the hook being rounded to prevent them from cutting threads engaged by the hook and thereby enable the device to be used for pulling bastings.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BELLE G. GALLE'NDER.
\Vitnesses ANNIE Goommn', GEORGE WV. CALLENDER.
