NITED STATES EDIVARD II. RANDELL, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
1 TH READ-CUTTING SEWlNG-THIMBLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ZPatent No. 624,088, dated May 2, 1899.
Application filed April 5, 1898. Serial No. 676,517. (No model.)
' To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. RANDELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Cutting Sewing-Thimbles; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in thread-cutting sewing-thimbles; and it consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a thimble provided with my improved thread-cutting feature. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View illustrating the manner of using the device.
Similar reference characters indicating corresponding parts in the views, let the numeral 5 designate the body of the thimble, which is provided with a hook-shaped threadcutting slot 5, which is open at the free edge of the thimble or the edge uppermost on the finger when in place. One edge of this slot is formed sharp enough to cut the thread readily when it passes into the slot.
The thimble is used in the usual manner, and the thread-cutting feature presents no projections liable to catch on the thread or article handled by the wearer. When it is desired to cut the thread, the latter is passed into the open slot and caught in the hookshaped extremity thereof, where it is severed without difficulty. 7
My improved thimble obviates the necessity for the disagreeable practice of severing the thread by biting it with the teeth.
It must be understood that I do not limit the invention to any precise shape of slot, as many forms other than that shown in the drawings may be employed without departingfrom the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is As an improved article of manufacture, a thimble provided with a slot formed in the body of the thimble and havinga sharp edge for thread-cutting purposes, said slot being open to receive the thread on the free or upper edge of the thimble.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD II. RANDELL.
