Description

H. C. BELLOWS.
STI TCH CUTTER. APPLICA'HO N FILED APR-1.1918.

HARRY CRAIG BELLOWS 0F SHREVEIORT, LOUISIANA.
STITCH-CUTTER;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1919.
Application filed April 1, 1918. Serial No. 226,042.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY C. BELLOWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Stitch-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for cutting stitches and is particularly designed for ripping seams in garments, etc. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character which can be attached readily to a table or other support and which is designed to utilize safety razor blades as cutting mediums.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will spread apart the sides of the seam during the ripping operation, thus to draw the stitches taut as they are presented to the edge of the cutting blade.
With the foregoing and other objects which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the pre ferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawin Figure l is a side elevation of the device attached to a support.
Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detail View of the blade holder.
Referring the the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a plate having upper and lower fingers 2 and 3 adapted to receive between them a support S. The upper finger has a jaw 1 for engaging the support while the lower finger 3 has an eye 5 in which is mounted a clamping screw 6 for engaging the support.
An extension 7 extends outwardly from the plate 1 and is provided nearthe plate 1, with upper and lower notches 8 while an arcuate wing 9 extends therefrom at its outer end and constitutes a clamping jaw. A clamping plate 10 is detachably and adjustably secured to one side of the extension 7 by a wing screw 11 or the like and this plate is provided at one end with upper and lower laterally offset ears 12 adapted to extend into the notches 8 and engage the far side of the extension '7. The other end of the plate 10 has an arcuate wing or clamping jaw 13 similar to the jaw 9 and arranged oppositely thereto.
A holding plate 1 1 is insertible between the extension 7 and the plate 10 and is provided with the slot 15 to receive the screw 11. This plate 14 is bent at its outer end to provide a fold 16 and a laterally extending stop flange 17 projects from the freeedge of the fold. The plate 14; is cut away along the crease of the fold to provide a slot 18 between stop ears 19.
A cutting blade 20, which can be an ordinary safety razor blade, is adapted to be inserted into the fold 16 with the ends of the cutting edge housed in the cars 19. The fold 16, with the blade projecting thereinto, is then adjusted forwardly between the jaws 9 and 13 until the flange 17 is brought against the inner surface of one of the jaws, as shown in Fig. 2. The screw 11 is then tightened, causing the jaws 9 and 13 to bind upon the fold and clamp the blade in place firmly.
After the parts have been assembled as described the device can be secured to the edge of a table or other support S and the material to be operated on is held in front of the edge of the blade, with the thread to be cut contactin with the edge of the blade. By drawing tide edges of the seam around the opposed jaws 9 and 13 and at the same time pulling the threads or stitches against the edge of the blade, the stitches will be drawn taut by the spreading action of the jaws 9 and 13 and the stitches accurately and rapidl severed.
at is claimed is A stitch cutter including a support engaging structure, adj ustably connected members having opposed jaws, a holding late insertible between the members and old thereby, said. plate having a fold projecting as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signabetween tile j awe middadaptegl 11:3 receive 1the ture in the presence of two Witnesses. cuttinv e ge of a b a e, t e 0 being s otp v ted to 'exp'ese the edge of the held blade, HARRY CRAIG BELLOWS' 5 and a stop upon the plate and between "the Witnesses:
