Beit :known that ERWIN R. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in 1the county of Franklin and LState of Ohio, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Twine Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
y @his invention krelates to improvements in'twine, string or cord cutters, and has for itsprimary object the provision of a simple, positive. and effective .device for facilitating the severing at desired points of a flexible fabric cable. l
Another `object kresides in the pro-vision sof a cord severingdevice, which consists of a .suitable base formed to include la rigid upstanding knifeelement protected by a solderedl guard, there being a resilient pressing .device situatedadjacent to the sharp- ZOwenededge of said Aelement for the ypurpose of .forcing a cord into. severing relationship therewithso as to i, insure the severing of the.latterirrespective of varying diameters or tenacity of the cord.
Anotherpbject ofthe invention rests in the provision of a cord severing device which may be readily handled by the operator or maintained in a stationary position during yoperation and wherein the construction of the device will be such as to enable the same to be safely employed without injury to the user.
For a further understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring more particularly to the details of the invention, and to the specific 45 form thereof disclosed in the accompanying drawing there is provided a base plate 1, formed to include counter sunk openings 2 adapted to receive suitable fastening elements bymeans of which the base may be secured to any suitable stationary support. The plate l is provided with an axially disposed upstanding boss 3, in which is formed a threaded bore 4 adapted for the reception of the lower threaded end 5 of an upstanding post 6, the latter being provided with an annular flange .7 limiting its `threaded movement downwardlyupon .the boss 3.

At this point it will be observed that the guard 16 encloses the screw l2, and prevents the latter from rotating, thereby locking the two sections of the base l1 together. The upper end of the guard 16 has it-s opposite walls provided with registering slots 18, defining therebetween horizontally curved arms 19, which are so situated as to protect the edges 15 of the knife element and prevent injury to the user of the tool.
n Another important feature of the invention resides in associating with each of the cutting edges of the knife element resilient finger members 20. Each of these finger members are of U-shaped formation and has the lower ends thereof imbedded in the base 11. The parallel arms 21 of said members extend upwardly and in parallelism with the sides of the knife element 14, and terminate in outwardly directed inclined loops 22. These loops diverge upwardly and Aserve in the capacity of guides for directing the cord to be severed toward the edges 15 of the knife element.
In operation a flexible cable, such for eX- ample as a suitable length of cord, which is adapted to be severed, is placed against the loops 22 of the finger members and is then forced downwardly until it engages with the knife edges l5. When this engagement initially occurs, the said finger members will be flexed and will exercise therefore a sufficient degree of pressure or tension upon the cord, in proportion to its thickness and the material from which it is formed to insure prompt severing thereof. If heavy twine be placed in the cutter, the pressure which the members 20 exercise thereon will be correspondingly greater than that pressure which the fingers exercise upon an ordinary piece of tying cord. By the inclusion, therefore, of the finger members 20, the operation of the device is rendered extremely effective and the task of severing cords of various thickness rendered simple and easy to perform, without requiring manual effort of any moment. It will be seen that the device may be used either when ernployed in connection with the base plate l or when wielded by grasping the handle 8,
and removing the same from the plate l,
in the manner of a knife. This tool may be usefully employed in any establishment requiring devices for constantly severing cord.
What is claimed is:
l. In a cord severing device, a base, a knife element projecting from said base, a guard disposed to one side of the edge of said knife element and extending substantially parallel tothe latter, and a resilient finger member arranged adjacent to the cutting edge of said knife element and operating to press cord to be severed against the sharpened edge. of said knife element, a base plate, a handle having its ends detachably engaged, respectively, with the base and base plate. A cord severing tool comprising a base including an outwardly projecting knife element, ay guard secured to said base and formed with longitudinal slots exposing the cutting'edges of said knife element and a pair of resilient fingers secured to said base and disposed within the Comines of said guard, said fingers serving to force the material to be severed into engagement with said knife element, and out-turned guide extremities formed upon the outer ends of said fingers.
3. ln a cord cutting tool, a base composed of two sections, a knife element arranged to be clamped between and projected by said sections, a tubular guard for frictionally engaging said sections to hold the same in clamped engagement with said knife element, and resilient fingers carried by said base and extending adjacent to the cuttin edges of said knife element.
4. In a cord cutting tool comprising a base, a knife element projecting from said base, a guard, a resilient finger extending adjacent to the4 cutting edge of said knife element and disposed within said guard,
a base plate, and means for detachably con-v necting said base with the base plate.
