Abstract

This invention relates to Utility Blade Holders, and more particularly it relates to such devices which may be formed to hold and to support safely a standard type shaving blade of conventional manufacture (double edge) and in such a manner as to permit the user to hold the blade by his fingers and to hold it securely and safely so as to permit the utilization of the blade to cut paper, cardboard, lether and other materials. Also the blade thus supported may be used as a scraping device. The device in question will also provide for a sturdy frame support, preferably made of light aluminum or light brass base, so formed and provided with appropriate protrusions which will permit the support of the blade in just the right position in the device and will prevent it from moving. The device also will provide a means for enclosing and covering the sharp edge of the blade when the latter is not used. A modification thereof will also provide for the utilization of a sliding plate which will be allowed to slide below the sharp edge of the blade to cover the edge when the device is not used, thus making double-sure that the user may not accidentally cut his finger, which may otherwise occur if the sharp edge of the blade is not appropriately protected.

UTILITY BLADE HOLDER The present invention relates to safety devices and more particularly of the type which will support a razor blade of conventional manufacture securely to permit the use of the blade as a cutting tool. The purpose of this invention is to utilize discarded safety razor blades to perform household, office and factory chores, such as cutting for any purpose, scraping, etc.
One object of the present invention is to provide a device of one piece construction. It would first be stamped out as to the desired shape flatly and then be formed for the final use. It will be appropriately provided with extrusions to hold the blade. Two operations only may be necessary for its manufacture if it is made of metal. Of course, it is understood, that in the event that it it is made of plastic it may be molded by the die in one single operation.
Another object of this invention is to provide a longitudinal plate so shaped as to receive the blade for seating the protruding cutting edge. At both extreme ends the indented portions of the blade may rest on two separate shoulders which are bent forward to contain the indented portions of the safety razor blade.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide the longitudinal side sufficiently bent forward in a sort of oval shape. This end serves to lock the blade firmly when the opposite side is used for cutting, scraping etc. This forward bent is sufficiently tight as to hold the blade firm, yet not too tight that it cannot be released with ease by the means herein described.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a plurality of holes (three holes) on the face of the flat razor holder. First a center hole for the sole purpose of pushing the blade outward for its removal. This hole may be somewhat larger than the other two holes to be yet mentioned. Any pointed instrument such as a penoil, a nail etc., will serve the purpose.
Another object of the present invention is to provide another pair of holes somewhat smaller which are merely for the purpose of hanging the holder with the blade when not in use, for easy finding and application when needed, and to keep it safely away from children. These two holes, it will be noted are aligned with the cut-out design in the razor blade for complete penetration through the holder and the blade when hanging the holder on a nail or a hook away from use.
A further object of this invention is to provide a single piece holder slightly elongated in shape or possibly the length of the plate so as to cover the cutting sharp edge of the blade when the latter is not in use so as to avoid a person cutting himself by accident.
A still further object of the present invention, as a modification, thereof, is to provide the above referred to safety blade holder with means to prevent it from being misplaced or lost when the device is not being used. Towards this end the holder may be provided with an elongated tapered slot and the holder can be then attached or anchored or secured through sliding it over the top edge of the blade device upon which it becomes anchored and is out of the way when the device is used for cutting. However, the holder in question may be easily removed from its anchorage and applied to the sharp edge of the blade to prevent accidental injury as above already described.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an additional flat safety plate which may be mounted to slide up and down against the device in question, and
may be moved up to clear the sharp edge of the blade for cutting, and moved down to cover the sharp edge of the blade for safety.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a locking or a limiting means. This arrangement will permit the aforesaid sliding plate to lock itself in its upper limit position so that it will not accidentally slide down when the device is in use and therefore interfere with the cutting. Or a pair of such limiting and locking means may be provided to lock the sliding plate both in its upper and its lower position.
This invention also contains certain other features of construction and the combination and arrangement of several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and in the specifications, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the figures, and more particularly to FIG. 1, which shows best the embodiment of the present invention, index numeral 20 indicates the general configuration of the device proper which is provided with a back wall 21, ending upon its upper portion thereof with a bend-in elongated portion 22, while at the bottom thereof the back wall 21 is turned around so as to form a pair of narrow upright members 23 and 24, inclusive, both of substantial length. The members 23 and 24 are of a minor width and serve the only purpose to hold the safety blade (B) which may be of conventional manufacture in its proper position in the device. It can be seen that the blade (B) consists of a pair of sharp razor edges 0 and b, respectively. It is discerned that the upper razor edge a is covered by the elongated bent portion 22, while the lower razor edge b is exposed. To prevent accidental injury and cuts when the tool is exposed and the device is not in use, the lower razor edge b can be protected by means of the elongated bar member 25. Referring more particularly to FIG. 8a (which is a section taken on the line 8a'-8a of FIG. 1) it can be discerned that the razor blade edge 17 fits snugly within the elongated groove 26 in the bar 25. Also it can be discerned that the opposite end of the bar 25 may be provided with a somewhat tapered elongated groove 27 which serves the purpose of anchoring the bar 25 over the device 20 substantially as shown in FIG. 5. The mounting of the bar 25 over the portion 22 prevents misplacement of the bar and also holds the upper end of the safety blade a in place and in proper alignment with the wall 21 of the device 20;
In gerneral this is the overall construction of the utility Blade Holder shown and described in FIGS. 1 to 8a, inclusive-The various views such as FIGS. 2 to 7, inclusive, simply illustrate the overall construction of the device in the present invention. It can be seen, of course, and readily understood that the blade (B) by means of its extensions (C) and (D) may be readily supported and vis held in place within the upturned sections 23 and 24, inclusive substantially as indicated.
Referring more particularly to FIGS. 9 to 14, inclusive, .they show a modification of the device shown in FIGS. 1 to 8a, inclusive, in this case the back up plate 28 similarly as with plate 21 ends in a downturned section 29 running the entire length of the device. A pair of supporting members 30 and 31 are similarly provided to support the blade (B) by its extensions (C) and (D). An additional sliding plate 32 may be provided which may have a pair of extensions 33 and 34, respectively. The plate 32 may be mounted to slide up-anddown within the space provided by the upturned members 30 and 31, substantially as indicated. The plate 32 has a finger lift 32' which facilitates sliding the plate up-and-down. The various views in FIGS. to 14, inclusive, show the pertinent details of this modification. FIG. shows the manner in which the sliding plate 32 by means of a dimple 34 may be locked in position within the V-shaped section 35 which is formed in either one ofthe bend extensions 30 and 31, inclusive.
From the foregoing it becomes obvious that in the device shown in FIGS. 1 to 8a, inclusive, it only requires the removal of the elongated bar member (which covers the blade edge b) and the device is ready for instant use. In like manner in the device shown in FIGS. 9 and 15, inclusive, the sliding bar or the plate 32 may be moved upwardly to permit instant use of the device as a cutting tool.
A careful examination of the foregoing description in conjunction, with the invention as illustrated in the drawings, will enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding and impression of the alleged features of merit and novelty, sufficient to clarify the construction of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Minor changes in shape, size and materials, and rearrangement of parts, may bevresorted to in actual practice, as long as no departure is made from the invention claimed.
1 claim:
1. In a device to be used as a cutting tool, comprising, in combination, a vertical flat wall, and means to support a razor blade against said flat wall, a blade having cutting edge, said supporting means including a pair of inverted vertical extensions mounted on either side of said flat wall and extending beyond said wall, said extensions formed in such a manner as to hold and to support securily said razor blade against said flat wall; and including an elongated bar, said bar having a pair of grooves running the entire length of said bar, one groove in said pair located over the other groove and running parallel to the first groove, by means of the first groove said bar being mounted over the cutting edge of said blade for safety purposes when said device is not being utilized as a cutting tool, the other groove in said pair having a tapered cross-section, said bar being removed from the cutting edge of said blade to expose said cutting edge when said device is being utilized as, a cutting tool, said bar, by means of said tapered groove being anchored stationary to said device away from the cutting edge of the razor blade aforesaid.
2. In a device of the class described to be used as a cutting tool, comprising, in combination, a vertical flat wall, and means to support a razor blade against said wall, a blade having cutting edge, said supporting means including a pair of inverted vertical extensions mounted on either side of said flat wall and extending slightly beyond said wall, said extensions formed to saddle over the ends of said razor blade and to hold said blade flat securily against said wall; and a secondary superimposed flat wall included having a finger lift, said secondary wall being movable up and down, one of said inverted vertical extensions located at one end of said superimposed secondary wall and the other at the 0pposite end, each of said extensions forming means to hold said member in a vertical position but permitting said member to slide, said member by means of the aforesaid finger lift being manually moved downwardly to cover the exposed cutting edge of said blade, and when moved upwardly to expose the cutting edge of said blade; said secondary wall having a pair of lateral extensions, one extension located on one end, and the other extension located in the apposite end of said secondary wall, said extensions cooperating with the inverted extensions aforesaid being fitted to slide freely up and down in said inverted extensions and permitting the secondary wall to be moved up and down; and locking means provided to hold the secondary wall in raised or in lowered position, said means comprising a raised portion in each of said lateral extensions, and a dimple in each inverted extension, each raised portion being located in a vertical line with each dimple in each inverted extension to form a lock to hold said secondary wall in its relative up and down position.

In a device to be used as a cutting tool, comprising, in combination, a vertical flat wall, and means to support a razor blade against said flat wall, a blade having cutting edge, said supporting means including a pair of inverted vertical extensions mounted on either side of said flat wall and extending beyond said wall, said extensions formed in such a manner as to hold and to support securily said razor blade against said flat wall; and including an elongated bar, said bar having a pair of grooves running the entire length of said bar, one groove in said pair located over the other groove and running parallel to the first groove, by means of the first groove said bar being mounted over the cutting edge of said blade for safety purposes when said device is not being utilized as a cutting tool, the other groove in said pair having a tapered cross-section, said bar being removed from the cutting edge of said blade to expose said cutting edge when said device is being utilized as, a cutting tool, said bar, by means of said tapered groove being anchored stationary to said device away from the cutting edge of the razor blade aforesaid.

In a device of the class described to be used as a cutting tool, comprising, in combination, a vertical flat wall, and means to support a razor blade against said wall, a blade having cutting edge, said supporting means including a pair of inverted vertical extensions mounted on either side of said flat wall and extending slightly beyond said wall, said extensions formed to saddle over the ends of said razor blade and to hold said blade flat securily against said wall; and a secondary superimposed flat wall included having a finger lift, said secondary wall being movable up and down, one of said inverted vertical extensions located at one end of said superimposed secondary wall and the other at the opposite end, each of said extensions forming means to hold said member in a vertical position but permitting said member to slide, said member by means of the aforesaid finger lift being manually moved downwardly to cover the exposed cutting edge of said blade, and when moved upwardly to expose the cutting edge of said blade; said secondary wall having a pair of lateral extensions, one extension located on one end, and the other extension located in the apposite end of said secondary wall, said extensions cooperating with the inverted extensions aforesaid being fitted to slide freely up and down in said inverted extensions and permitting the secondary wall to be moved up and down; and locking means provided to hold the secondary wall in raised or in lowered position, said means comprising a raised portion in each of said lateral extensions, and a dimple in each inverted extension, each raised portion being located in a vertical line with each dimple in each inverted extension to form a lock to hold said secondary wall in its relative up and down position.
