CHARLES W. CAREY, OF liSHINGTOY, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO OWEN K. TRUITT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. March 12,
lVashington. in the District of Columbia, j
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in toys, and has to do more particularly with that type of device which has for the object oi the game, the catching ot a ball. Heretolore, various forms of devices have been proposed for this purpose, ditlerent as to detail structure, but all having the same general characteristic of a handle having a receptacle fixedly attached thereto, and a string at the end of the handle carrying a hall or other object. The object of the game has been "to get the ball or other object into the receptacle or holding device by a proper manipulation of the handle, first throwing the ball into the air, and then catching it in the receptacle.
The manner of playing the game is the same in my present case, as that just outlined, but the object of my invention is to make the game considerably more diflicult and thereby adding interest to the play.
briefly speaking, my improvement consists in having the receptacle or holder for the ball or other object, on a string or cord which is attached to the handle, thus giving to the receptacle a. free, difticultly-controlled movement such as the ball itself has. That is to say, instead of fastening the receptacle or holder on the handle or stick, I secure it to the cord, and permit it to dangle from the handle. Suitable means may be provided for holding the cup in an upright position, and the game consists in so manipulating the handle or stick, by jerking or swinging, as to cause the ball to fall into the cup.
Obviously, various means may be employed for carrying into ettect. the present idea, but the general outline of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following specification and appended claims, in conjunction with the annexed drawings, forming a part hereof. and in which I have disclosed the preferred form of construction.
In the drawings, Figure I is a view in elevation, partly in section, showing my im- Patented June 15, 1909.
1909. Serial No. 482,923.
proved device. Fig. II is a detail view, in
; section, of the cup, and attaching means theretor.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A designates the handle or stick, to
which is attached the cord or string B. The cord B carries at its other end the ball or other suitable projectile O. Intermediate the handle A and projectile O is the cup D, carried by the cord B. The cord B passes through an opening in the bottom of the on D, and on either side of the bottom of the cup, and surrounding the cord B are the washers E. The cord B may be knotted at points F, so as to afford a means for holding the washers E in position, against the faces of the bottom of the cup D. In this way, the cup D is held stationary, against movement lengthwise of the cord B, and also maintains a normally vertical position as shown in Fig. I.
In playing the game, by properly swinging or jerking the handle A, the ball C is cause to drop into the cup I) as it falls, although this is comparatively difiicult of accomplishment, and can be attained only after long practice.
It is to be understood that various moditications of the structure shown may be devised, for carrying into effect the present invention, which consists broadly in a device such as that outlined, and in which both the receptacle and the projectile are carried by the cord or other swinging member, and by this application, and the appended claims I desire to cover fully any such variations oi? the precise construction herein disclosed.
Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters-Patent and claim is:
1. A toy of the character described including av handle, a loosely swinging member secured thereto, a ball or projectile carried by said loosely swinging member, and means for holding the ball or projectile also mounted on the aforementioned loosely swinging member.
2. A toy of the character described including a handle, a cord secured thereto, a ball or projectile carried by the cord, and means for holding the ball or projectile, said means also being mounted on the cord.
3. A toy of the character described including a handle, a cord secured thereto, a ball or projectile carried by the cord, and a cup or receptacle for holding the ball, said cup or receptacle also being mounted upon the cord.
&. A toy of the character described including a handle, a cord secured thereto a ball or projectile carried by the cord, a cup or receptacle for receiving the ball said cup also being mounted upon the cord, and means for holding the cup or receptacle against movement longitudinally of the cord.
5. A toy of the character described includ ing a handle, a cord secured thereto, a ball or projectile carried by the cord. a cup or receptacle for holding the ball, said cup also being mounted upon the cord, and means for retaining the cup or receptacle normally in a vertical position.
(3. A toy of the character described including a handle, a cord secured thereto, a ball or projectile carried by the cord, a cup or i receptacle for holding the ball, said cup also being mounted upon the cord and means for holding the cup or receptacle against movement longitudinally of the cord and for retaining the same normally in a vertical position.
7. A toy of the character described including a handle, a cord secured thereto, a ball or projectile carried by the cord, a cup or receptacle for holding the ball, said cup also being mounted upon the cord, disks arranged on either side of the bottom of said cup or receptacle, the aforementioned cord being knotted at points adjacent to the disks.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature, in the presence of two subscribing \vitnesscs.
