J. WALTER. DICE BOX.
No. 560,874. Patented May 26, 1896.
Arm Nm.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
JULIIIS WALTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DICE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 560,874, dated May 26, 18,96.
Application led January 16 1896. Serial No. 575,747. (No model.)
enhancing the interest in the game by fur` nishing an attachment which is adapted to indicate whose turn it is to shake the box.
The invention consists of a dice-box containing a number of dice and provided with a transparent top, and a separate receptacle containing a number of loose balls or other suitable objects, said receptacle having an observationppening and being provided with a catch for holding one of the balls in register with the observation-opening, as will be hereinafter described, and then particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a bottom perspective view of the device. Fig. 3 is a transverse diametrical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The dice-box A may be made of circular or other suitable form and is provided with a transparent top a, through which the set of dice B (three in number) contained in the box may be observed. There is nothing new in the dice-box by itself, the improvement relating to an attachment which imparts to the game a greater degree of,chance. This attachment consists of a receptacle O in the form of a cap which iits onto the bottom of the box like a cover and within which is arranged a spring-actuated catch consisting of a lever D, pivoted at d to the bottom C of the receptacle, and having at its inner end a cup-shaped holder D', arranged opposite the center of the bottom of the receptacle, at
which point the same is provided with an ob? servation-opening e, which may be glazed or entirely open. The outer end of the leverD extends through an apertured in the side wall ofthe receptacle, so that it can `be manipulated by hand for causing the holder D of the catch to retain one of the balls or other suitable objects F in the receptacle in registry with the observation-opening c. The balls F are each of a different color-say one is red, one blue, and the other yellow-and in order that the tendency of the balls will be to roll or gravitate toward the observation-opening the bottom of the receptacle O is made concave at its inner side.
The apparatus is used as follows: Suppose two persons wish to throw the dice. Then each of them selects a ball. One of the persons now slightly shakes the box, and at the same time depresses the lever D by one iinger, so as to raise the holder D' against the action of the spring S. One of the balls is now permitted to roll into the observation-opening e, whereupon the lever is released and the holder D confines the ball in registry with the observation-opening. If the ball at the opening is the one previously selected by the player, he throws the dice in the usual manner with diceboXes; but if the wrong ball appears the device is handed to the `other player, who manipulates the apparatus to see if the ball selected by him appears, and so on.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A dice-box, containing a set of dice and provided with a separate receptacle containing a set of indicator-balls and having an observationopening with which one of the set of balls at a time may register, substantially as set forth.
2. The dice-throwing apparatus herein described, consisting of a dice-box containing a set of dice, and a receptacle attached to the dice-box and having an observation-opening, and provided with a catch for holding one of a set of balls in the receptacle in register with said opening, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my 4invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
