METALLIC BARREL.
No. 924,520.- f
-To' all whom'fit may concern: 4-
Beit known that I, STEPHEN. MARSHALL l United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of lShelby and State 4of Tennessee,"have` invented certain new and useful Improvements in Me-. ltallic. Barrels, of which'the lfollowingis a( specification. v
vMy invention relates to' metallic barrels and particularly to that class lof barrels. .adapted to Acontain lime, although my iin-.- proved barrelv is'also capable Aof many otherV uses. n *i The objects of the inventionare-to 4provide, in a barrel'of this class, sectionsof athree-part barrel so 'formed that 'they may be firmly secured together Withoutofferingl obstruction to the. rolling ofthe barrel, and that they maybe readily nested when taken :apart for shipment, to lhave one of said ,se'c-l tions 'constitute a removable 'lid andy means Iv.fon-securely' fastening the same 1n position without. obstructing' the outer surface of the barrel and to provide particular strengthening means for the body of tlie'barrel. l To these ends lmy, invention is embodied in .the -form hereinafter described andl claimed.v 7..
In the accompanying drawings 'whichillustrate the invention; Figure l is a front v view vin elevation of one forni of barrel; Fig.
2, a 'vertical section of same barrel; Fig'. 3, anI elevation showingl sections' of barrel nested; Fig. et, a detail elevation broken away horizontally and partly in vertical section of a modifiedforni of lid-securing. means; Figf, an elevation of a barrel of modified Yforni showing distinctive means i for securing the two sections together' andl l' the barrel.

Referring to the drawings, and first to the barrel' shown in Figs. -1, 2 and 3, 1 isthe upper metallic section of a vtwo-part barrelbody and 2 is the lower section. These 'sections are shaped like the frustum of a cone, and their larger ends-meet at'themiddle of Each section has a series of beads 3 which increase fthe-.rigidity ofthe ,barrel and in which may ,bel-inserted," if desired, spring,y hoops for strengthening the The'bottom of the lower section 2- -is count/ersunkas'shown ate, to raiseAthe' bottom-'.f-rom'conta'ct with the ground and,

.section 2 is provided with'a'n interior band i, videa strengthened andstitl'ened rim for the barrel section` at thelatters juncture lwith 1the uilper section. This band also pro-V vides a su ciently rigid structure to form a' substantial support for the section-fastening means.' v
y' vThe'lowei section is adapted to fit' within the uppersection-and to this end, the lower Ill POItOIl Of the. upperjsection is oll'set or Viared, "fornnng a verticalf-flange (3' and a horizontal shoulder 7. The fiafnge i 6, as shownfis of the width of the interior rigid band andformsa seat therefor. A' vertical permanentlyfsecured brace Sextends from top to bottom of the upper section, strengthtion. Similarvertical braces 9 are` secured on the lower-section.
.TW hen .the tworsections .are assembled' to forma complete barrel, the flared, overhanging rinrof the uppersection will; fit over the upper,bandfprotectedrim of the lower see tion 2fand the .-should'erl, will tit upon the upper edge of the-lower section. ,Bolts 10. are then passedv through apertures 11 in the overlapping rim portions'of the two sections i and through the rigid band 5, which forms a firm support for-the bolts. The inner ends of the bolts are 'provided with nuts or other means to hold the bolts-in place. lVith this arrangement the rigid band 5 not only provides a strong edge-protected rim at the junction of the parts but also a central rigid fiat bearing surface on which the barrel may be `rolled Without` bending lor weakening the saine and at the same time a suiciently strong construction is provided to i enable merely the substantially non-projecting bolts to be employedas fasteningmeans. 4 On the upper body section 1 is adapted to be detachably secured a cover section l2- having' a flat disk portion and a depending flange 13 which takes o ver the upper edgel of 'the upper body section. The flange is provided'with strengthening beads 14, 15 at top and-bottom thereof. l
On fthe interior of:.t.he flange of the cover isl -a'I Vert-ical lug 16 extending downwardly beyond the lower'fbeadml and terminating` eningl the entire section and particularly the'- loverlapping rim portion.` lThis brace is preferably provided at the seam of the sec? in a loop ore'ye 17. vThis loop is adapted to tit between tivo similar loop or eye members 18, carried by separate lugs 19, mounted on the section 1. When the cover is in place a pin 20, having a head 21,'is adapted to be passed through the three adjoining eyes and thus securely connect the cover and the Y upper section together. These eyes when the vcover is 4in place abut against the vbead on thelower edge of the cover and are protected thereby, during the rolling or other han' (lling of the'barrel. The clasp formed by this pin and -eye connection enables the cover to be readily detached. at any time andyet offers' no undue exterior obstruction such as would interfere Withthe nesting of the' upper section havingthe cover attachedthereomj withinthe lower section.
Figa illustrates the manner 4in 'which the sections maybe nested, one Within-the other for transportation. 'I y In Fig. il, there is shown a modified form ot'atta'chiiig means for the 4cover consisting oi screw threaded lugs 2Q, secured to the in-l ner edge of the upper section-23 and adapted to project iipiiv'ardl-y 'and pass through apertures in the cover 2-1, and' having theirouter ends engaged by nuts 25, The cover lits looselyvv over the lugs-or screws andthe nuts.;
are then used to clamp the cover in place onl the barrel.
-. In 5, a modification ofthebarrel is sho\ vn in which an iipper's'ection.Qprovided `ivith a lower beaded edge 27 is adapted to lit over the upper part of a lower barrel section This lower section is provided With a collar 29. having a horizontal flange 30 and vertical strengthening portions 3l. The
horizontal flange is provided with bolt holes 32 through which pass "long vertical bolts 33, extending at their ends through lugs 343 fixed on'a cover 35. The cover fits over the upper edge of the upper section of the barrel. Nuts 36, 37, are secured to the upper and lower -ends of the bolts, resiectively. Four of these bolts are preferab ployed, if desired. In this forni of barrel `the horizontal flange on the collar at the upper edge of the lower section provides a suiiiciently rigid bearing for the barrel when being rolled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A metallic barrel made in three parts, one p'art-forining'a detachable lid Section, and
rately with exterior, longitudinal, perinanent, strengthening braces, an interior flat circumferential band of greater rigidity than the-body of the barrel at the outer edge'of Width of the band, said fiar-ed portion forming. a Hat rigid bearing member, and fastening means for securing the two main sections y provided although a greater or lessv number may be cuihaving the two main sections provided sepaone section and permanently secured thereto, the: engaging section being outwardly flared 'at its inner edge' tor a distance equal to the together, whereby.- the assembling of the
