Description

OCZIM @MEM au', j
EDSON HA RTWELL, OF HUBBARDSTO'N, MASSACHUSETTS.
Let/ters Patent No. 92,443, lated July 13, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
- view of a detached part;
Figure 3 represents a top or plan view of the pints shown in iig. 2, the said parts being shown separate from each other and Figure 4 represents an edge view of the parts as shown in iig. 2.
Figure 5 represents a top or plan view of one ofthe sides of the lower frame. y
To enable those skilled in the artto which my iuvention belongs, to make and use -the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings- A is the seat ofthe chau, supported by two forked standards B, one at each side.
llhe upper endsof the forksa c are provided with flat horizontal projections b b, through which holes c are made for receiving' the screws, by which the said standards are fastened to the'under side of the seat A, the seat being eut out, or recessed, to receivethe tiat projections 11 b of each standard B.
The lower ends of the standards B are constructed and are supported'in the same manner shown and de,- serbed in a patent previously granted to me, in July, 1868, and therefore no detailed description is necessary in this connection, more than the statement that thc lower ends of the standards are rounded oil', in
the form shown in dotted lines, g. 2, the curved ends Z d projectingthrough slots, or holes e e, in the rockerplate C, upon which the lower ends of'the standards' B rock.
The sides l) of the lower frame are composed of three pieces, E, E, and F. v
The pieces E are curved, to conform to the shape of the sea-t A.
The centre-pieces F project down, as shown at f, the lower end of the projection f being-grooved out, to fit the side rounds g, and upon which they are designed to rest.
. By making the upper-ends of the stands forked, as
shown in the drawings, the seat is supported in a firmer and more secure n'ianner, and, besides, there is,`
less liability of the connections breakingr when thus formed. Y
The upper inner ends of the pieces are dowelled to the central pieces F, `in a securel manner.
Y The seat A has combined with it two spiral springs G G, for the purpose of retaining the seat of the chair in the position shown in iig. 1, except when the seat is rocked back 'and forth bythe occupantoftbe chair.
The operation of the springs is the same as in my previously-patented chair.
Having described my improved rocking-chair,
What I claim therein as new, and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The forked standards B, whenmade and kcombined with the chair, asishown and described.
'2. The combination of the pieces E, E, and l", substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. 'The combination of the side projections f with the rounds y, substantially asl described.
' EDSON HAR'IWELL. Witnesses:
