Description

- A. WIGHT. KNOGKDOWN BOX.
APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 30,1908.
ATTORIVE rs 60 ---w1th transverse strips ARTHUR M. WIGHT, on NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE GENERAL PACKAGE COMPANY,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.,A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
Knooxnown Box. I
Toall' whom it may concern): 1
Be it known that I, ARTHUR M. citizen of the New York, in State of New WIGHT, a United States, .and residing at York, have invented certain new and usefulo Improvements in Knockdown Boxes,
I section of my members bers c.
;-and the length of of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
. {lhis'invention relates to what are known as collapsibleor knockdown boxes for use in the shipment or ackage' and shipment of various kinds and classes of articles, and the object thereof is to provide an improved box of this class which is simple'in construction and comparatively inexpensive, and the separate parts of which may be compactlyfolded an placed together for return shipment.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanyingdrawin forms a part, in which the separate parts 0 my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which t Figure 1 1s a central longitudinal vertical improved box on the line 11 of Fig. 3, Fig. 2 avertical transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 a plan-view, Fig. 4 a partial section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and ;Fig.5 aside View showing the method of folding and placing the separate parts of the box together. I
My improved knockdown box comprises two similar sidemembers a, two similar end band similar top and bottom mem- The box is oblong and rectangular in form,
the end members I) determines the space between the side members a, the inner corners of the end members I) being. hinged to the inner corners of the side members a as clearly shown at d in Fig. 4.
The hinges at cl are composed of wire 100" s d, in the form of construction shown, an the 'top and bottom edges ofthe end members b are provided with transverse strips e which are secured thereto, and the top and bottom a of the'box are provided f which are secured thereto at a redetermined distance'from the ends thereo 7 v The vertical dimensions of the end por- Specification of Letters Patent. the county of New York and through the ends I) or .or bolts h are turned and "so that the inner endsthereof serve' to Patented June 8, 1909.
into position over the sides a and under the transverse strips (2 which are secured to the ends 6 as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The top and bottom parts a are also provided between the transverse strips f which are secured thereto and the transverse strips 0 which are secured to the ends 6 with staples "or loops 9, and passed inwardly between said ends and the transverse strips e are headed pins or bolts 12. provided at their inner ends with angular fingers or catches 72. and when the top and bottom 0 have been inserted into position as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, ,the pins or'bolts 'h are moved inwardly so that the inner end portions thereof pass through the loops or staples g, and said pins or bolts are turned so that the fingers or catches k are in a horizontal positlon, and this securely locks the separate parts ofthe box in position for use as clearly shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive. v
In order to knockdown the box for return shipment, or other purposes the pins moved outwardly will disengage the loops or staples g, and the top and bot- .tom parts a maybe slipped out and the side and end portions folded together as shown in Fig.5,- and the top and bottom parts may beplaced thereon as is also indicated in said figure.
The transverse strips f that are secured to the top and bottom members of the box strengthen said top and bottom members, and also to protect the loops or staples g in the shipmentof the box, and it will be understood, of course, that my improved knockdown or collapsible box may be made of any desired dimensions and of any preferred material, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein de scribed may be made, within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V l. A knockdown box composed of similar side members, similar end members and similar top and bottom members, the horizontal dimensions of the end members being equal to the distance between the side members when the parts of the box are set up for use, the inner corners of the end members being also hinged to the inner corners of the side members, and the vertical dimensions of the end members being greater than the vertical dimensions of the side members, transverse strips secured to the top and bottom of the end members and adapted to overlap the top and bottom members of the box, said top and bottom members of the box being adapted to be slipped into position, and means for securing the end members to the top and bottom members.
2. A knockdown box comprising similar side members, similar end members and similar top and bottom members, the horizontal dimensions of the end members being equal to the space between the side members when the separate parts of the box are set up for use, the vertieal dimensions of the end members being also greater than the vertical dimensions of the side members, and the inner corners of the end members being hinged to the inner corners of the side members, the top and bottom members being separate from the side and end members, and the end members being provided at the top and bottom thereof with transverse strips adapted to overlap the top and bottom members when the latter are in positiom'said top and bottom members being also provided adjacent to the ends thereof with transverse stri s which are secured thereto, and outwar y of said strips with loops or staples, and pins or bolts passed inwardly "through the top and bottom of the end members and adapted to engage said loops or sta )les so to lock the top and bottom and en members of the box together.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 29th day of June 1908.
