Description
O. W'.. ELLERBB;
HINGE. APPLICATION FILED AUG.24, 1908 923,037. Patented May 25 1909.
i To all: whom it may concern:
CHARLIE WIGKOM ELLERBE, OF LAKELAND, FLORIDA.
HINGE .Be it known that I, CHARLIE WIoKoM EL- LERBE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeland, in the county of Polk and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Hinge, of which the following is aspeci- This invention relates to hinges and has for its object to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive device of this character capable of being readily'attached to a door, gate I i or other closure and which may be adjusted to allow for sagging of the door or settling of thedoor frame.
A further object of the invention is to provide a close fitting hinge including an attaching bracket having a bar pivotally connected therewith and mounted for sliding movement in a casing or housing, there being a series of perforations formed in the casing and adapted to register with the corresponding perforations in the bar to permit the insertion of a pin, thereby to lock the bar in adjusted position.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appearin the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, pro
portions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the a ppended claims.
\ Inthe accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a erspective view of a door provided with a hinge constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig.2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is adetail perspective view of a ortion of the door showing the bracket and ar attached thereto. 7
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved hinge forming the subject matter of the present invention may be applied to a gate, door or other closure and by way of illustration is shown in connection with a swinging door of the ordinary construction in which 5 designates the door and 6 the door frame.
The hinge comprises a bracket 7 designed for attachment to the inner longitudinal edge of thedoor and ada ted to fit in a recess 8 formed therein, said racket being supported Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Application filed August 24, 1908. Serial No. 450,046.
passes through an opening formed in one end of the bar 12, while the opposite end of said bar is provided with one or more perforations 14 adapted to register with corresponding perforations 15 formed in the casing 13 to permit the insertion of a locking in 16.
The casing 13 is provided wit laterally extending flanges 17 for contact with the adjacent face of the door frame, said flanges being formed with a seriesof openings for the reception of screws or similar fastening devices 18 by means of which the casing may be fastened in position on the door frame.
The outer end of the casing is closed so as to prevent the entrance of dust or dirt to the interior thereof, while the brackets 7 are dis posed flush with the adjacent edge of the door thereby to allow the door to bear against the frame when said door is in closed position and. thus form a close fitting hinge.
It will thus be seen that by removing the locking pins of either hinge and sliding the bars longitudinally within the casing or housing, said hinges-may be adjusted to allow for any sagging of the door or door frame, said bars being locked in adjusted position by inserting the pins in the openings in the casings, in the manner before described.
The hinges may be made in different shapes and sizes and used in connection with swinging doors, gates, windows or wherever a hinge of this character is found desirable.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. The combination with relatively stationary and movable members, of a bracket secured to one of said members, a casing secured to the other member and having a se ries of openings formed therein, a bar having one end thereof pivotally connected with the bracket and its opposite end slidably mounted in the casing and provided with a perforation adapted to register with the perforations in the casing, and, a locking pin extending through the registering perforations for locking the bar in adjusted position.
2. The combination With relatively stationary and movable members, of a bracket secured to one of said members and having its free end bifurcated to form spaced ears, a casing secured to the other member, a bar having one end thereof pivotally mounted between the ears of the bracket and its oppo- V 10 site end slidably mounted Within the casing,
j and a pin extending transversely through the casing and engaging the bar for locking the latter in adjusted position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the resence of tWo Witnesses.
HARLIE VICKOM ELLERBE. Witnesses JAS. A. DAvis, S. W FEARRAND.
