BARRETTE.
. Specification of 'Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Applioatlon led November 28, 1908. Serial No, 464,930.
1b all whom it fmay cancem:
13e it known that I, WILLIAM S. BEcrrroLD, a cltizen of the United States, and a resident v of Newark, inthe county of Essex and State toise shell, Celluloid or the like (it being desirable that the upper portion, at least, be
l relatively thin), the upper part of which is cut or formed to the required shape and the l base of 'which is cemented to the body of the to very readily break barrette. This construction of the member possesses very serious disadvantages, how# ever, in that this comparative thinness renders theml fragile; and the relatively small securing surface of their base, due to the thin material used, oiers but a small holdin surface, causing the hin e piece or the hoo oft and thereby render the barrette useless.
It is the object ofthe present invention to so construct' the said members that the de sirable, relatively thin upper portion is retained, but a substantial reinforcement is provided for same, and that the adhering surface is such readily broken off. Several forms of such members are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a barrette with my improved members attached. Fig. 2is a view of the hook end of the barrette.
Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views ofthe hook member shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the drawin 4, 10 designates the back or bo y portion of a barrette, and 11 the to ue or pin. This tongue or pin 11 is pivota y connected to a hinge piece 12, and is adaptedto be held by a s, Figs.'` 1 to that the members are not portion, a pin or tongue,
'connectin said pin or tongue to the bod the underside of the base,
hook 13. The hinge piece and hook each consist of two parts, and inner part 14 whic is relatively thinas required and cut or formed to the desired shape; and a lower part 15, provided with a recess or slot 16, adapted to receive and reinforce the upper part 14, the same being cemented to the said part 1.5 so that they are in effect one piece. with the required securing surfaceto prop- `erlv hold the said members.
claim 1. In a barrette comprising a back or body portion, a hook, and a pin'or tongue, a fastening member consisti from sheet material, one eing the uplper and holding portion adapted to pivota y hold said pin or tongue, and the other forming the base, having a large securing surface and a recess through said base adapted to snugly receive and retain said upper part with the Fi s. 3 and 4,--an uppery The lower part 15 1s made of two parts struck l lower end flushwith the underside of the base,
whereby the base and upper lpart mag be 'simultaneously secured to the ack or ody portion, by cement or the like.
2. In a barrette comprising a back or body means for pivotally portion, a ook consisting of two arts struc 4 from sheet material, 'one being t e u per or hook portion adapted to receive sai pin or ton' .ue and comprising a thin upper part bent in t e shape of a hook and the other forming the base, having a large securin surface and a recess extending through said ase adapted to snu ly receive and retain said upper part or hoolgi portion with the lower end ush with and hook ortion may be simultaneously secured to t e back or body portion by cement or the like.
