Description

S. WEINTRAUB CLEANING DEVICE May 27, 1930.
Filed Aug. 7, 1928 Patented `May 27, 1930 UNITED STATES SAMUEL WEINTRAUB, OIE' NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLEANING DEVICE Application led August 7, 1928. Serial No. 297,942.
1o tend in a plane substantially parallel with the brush.
A still further object is to provide a handle having at one end an angular fitting readily attachable to and interchangeable with any of a number of cleaning devices such as brushes, dust mops, brooms, etc.
These advantageous objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully recited and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this disclosure, and in which Fig. 1, is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention, showing the mop removed and the handle secured in its angular position.
Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view of the same, taken substantially on the center of the device.
Fig. 3, is a similar sectional view, but showing a mop as attached and the handle extending parallel with the brush.
Referring in greater detail tothe drawing, a brush backing is generally designated bythe numeral 5, this backing being an ob- 5 long rectangle in shape and having bristles 6 or the like secured in the usual manner in its under side which is preferably hollowed for that purpose.
The upper longitudinal corner edges of the backing contain recesses 7 receptive of a wire bar 8 having a central outstandingY loop 9 to act as a handle in raising and lowering the bar, which is bent at right angles over the ends of the backing and engaged centrally y therein by integral pivots 10 formed on the ends of the bent portions.
Thus this bar, which co-nstitutes a bail .or clamping member may be used to confine the edge of a exible textile fabric 11 in the re- 50 cess, this fabric having at its free edge a plurality of strands 12 constituting a mop, which in operation may extend under the brushes 6 of the brush.
Rigidly attached by screws on the upper side of the backing 5, at approximately its y center, is a plate 111, which may have a raised reinforcement, and extending integrally outward from the plate is a concave bracket 15 having downwardly curved edges and containing intermediate its length a transverse slot 16.
The handle 17, which fits the bracket, is provided with a screw eye 18 which upon being passed through the slot and turned at a right angle, serves to lock the handle and bracket together.
Set in the top of the backing 5, in spaced relation, are a pair of screw eyes 19, adapted to pass through slots 20 in a handle plate 21 from which rises a cylindrical socket 22 disposed at an angle to the backing, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, and in this socket is set the opposite end of the handle 17 by means of a screw eye 23 passing through an opening 24 in the under side of the socket 22, thus locking the handle therein.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the handle and socket may be removed orapplied as an entity to any brush backing.
'Also upon reversing the handle it may be attached to the bracket 15, thus providing for two distinct positions; and also that the socket 22 may be reversed with respect to the brush so that even wear may be had on both sides of the brush.
Although the foregoing is descriptive of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that minor changes may be made in the construction, without the exercise of invention or conflicting with the scope of the claim hereto appended.
Having thus described my invention, which I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1n a brush having an elongated rectangular backing from which the bristles extend, a longitudinal recess in each of the upper front and rear corners of said backing, a wire rod having pivotal connections at the ends of said backing to permit swinging selective- 1y into either recess, a handle on said rod, a mop having a part clamped in either recess by said rod, said mop including a plurality of wiping elements adapted to fold below said bristles.
Signed in the city, County, and State of New York, this l day of August, 1928.
SAMUEL WEINTRAUB.
