CORNER BEAD OR STRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,344, dated January 17, 1905.
Application filed April 4, 1904. erial No. 201,533-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. HURLBERT, of Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner Beads or Strips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of corner beads or strips having clips designed to be secured directly to a wall and provided with means for retaining the bead in position.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved form of bead and clip whereby thelatter, while capable of rigidly holding the bead, may yet be readily adjusted longitudinally of the latter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a bead and clip constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the device secured to the angle of a wall. Fig. 3 shows the clip and a portion of the bead out of engagement.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a corner bead or strip, preferably of metal, designed to be positioned at the angle of a wall and to project such distance from the corner that the plaster may be applied flush with its edge, whereby the finished surface will have a firm seat and not be readily broken or cracked at its exposed corner. The head or strip is shown as consisting of a single piece of metal bent at its longitudinal center approximately in the form of a bowed spring to form a circular trough or channel 2, the outer contour of which forms the bead proper and divergent side walls 3, terminating in lateral flanges 4E. The walls are provided, as usual, with holes or perforations to accommodate the plaster.
5 designates the clip. This is shown as consisting of a single metallic plate bent back upon itself to provide engaging arms or mem' bers 6, having holes or perforations 7, by which the clip is secured to a wall or joist. At the point at which it is bent upon itself the plate is formed in the shape of abowed spring and a circular portion 8 thus provided, designed to be accommodated by the circular trough or channel 2 of the bead 1. After forming the bowed spring the arms 6 of the plate are brought close together, as at 9, andthen bent diver-gently. A clip thus made will securely retain the bead, but may readily be adjusted longitudinally to any point of the latter or removed therefrom by pressing the arms 6 together to overcome the tension of the spring. hen the clip is positioned in the bead, its arms 6 are normally bearing outwardly against the walls 3, adjacent the trough or channel 2. Thus it will be seen that the two elements have substantially a spring action which insures their positive engagement, but which permits of ready adjustment.
The advantage of my invention is that the construction of the article is simplified and its cost of manufacture lessened, at the same time providing means for positively holding the bead and yet permitting the clip to be adjusted to any desired point.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination with a corner strip or bead havingtwo correspondingdivergent side walls and an intermediate trough or channel, of a clip movable within the space between said walls longitudinally thereof and having a bowed portion designed to be accommodated by said trough or channel and normally held therein by frictional engagement, for the purpose stated.
2. The combination with a strip or bead consisting of a single piece of metal bent to form substantially a bowed spring and corresponding side walls, of a clip consisting of a single piece of metal bent to form a bowed spring and corresponding side arms, the bowed porsingle piece of metal bent back upon itself to specification in the presence of two subscribform two corresponding arms and a bowed mg W1tnesses.'
portion designed to fit in and capable of being moved longitudinally of said trough or WILLIAM HURLBERT' 5 channel wherein it is normally held by fric- Witnesses:
tional engagement. J. H. LONGSTREET,
In testimony whereof I have signed this W. H. SMILEY.
