Description

No. 783,244. PATENTED FEB. 21. 1905. F. BURNS.
TACK GRIP.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 31. 1904.
UNITED STATES Patented February 21, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
TACK-GRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,244, dated February 21,- 1905.
Application filed May 31, 1904. Serial No. 210,478-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Tack-Grips, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for holding or gripping a tack, nail, or screw while it is being driven. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tack-grip. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
A is a tack-grip made of a single piece of metal bent substantially as shown, so as to 7 form two members A A B is the handle portion, and G is the grip portion.
The two members are twisted midway of their length to form a handle portion B and grip portion C, the members of the grip portion being edge to edge, as shown, so that they will rest directly on the carpet. There is sufficient spring in the metal to keep the edges of the portions A and A together, yet the parts can yield so that the grip can be withdrawn from the tack after it has been partly driven. I
The edges of the members A and A are notched at 01, so as to receive a tack and pre,
vent it moving in the grip, the notches being shallow enough that the grip will bind against the body of the tack. In some instances only one member may be notched, if desired.
In order to prevent the parts becoming out of line, I form a lip a on the part A, which overlaps the part A and I form a lip a on the part A which overlaps the part A. The entire grip is preferably stamped out of one sheet of metal, which is afterward suitably bent and twisted, as shown in the drawings.
In using the tack-grip the tack is first inserted in the opening formed by the notches d and the grip is placed in position, the tack is driven partly into the carpet and floor, and then the grip is withdrawn by simply pulling upon it, allowing it to spring apart suificiently to release the tack, and then the tack is driven to the full depth.
While I have described my invention as particularly useful in fastening carpets to a floor, it will be understood that the tack-grip can be used tohold a tack in any position either against the floor or wall, or it may be used to hold brads, nails, or even screws, the object being to provide means for holding either a tack, nail, or-screw while it is being driven.
I claim as my invention 1. As a new article of manufacture, a tackgrip made of metal and bent to form two members, said members being twisted so that their grip portions will be edge to edge, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a tackgrip made of a fiat strip of spring metal bent to form two members, said members being twisted so that their grip portions will be edge to edge, one of said grip portions being notched, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a tackgrip made of flat metal bent to form two members, each member being twisted so that the grip portions will be edge to edge and each having a lip, the lip of one section overlapping the other section, substantially as described.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a tackgrip made of flat metal bent to form two mem bers, each member being twisted at a point midway of its ends so that the grip portions will be edge to edge, each grip portion being notched and each having a lip to keep the members in alinement, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK BURNS.
