UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM EDMUNDSON, DENVER, COLORADO.
PICTURE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming' part 0f Letters Patent N0. 674,438, dated. May 21, 1901.
Application iiled October 16, 1900. Serial No. 33,287. (No model.)
To all Inh/ont it mag/concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM EDMUNDsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picture-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to pictu re-hooks; and the primary object thereof is to provide a device of the character described which may be utilized in rooms in which there is no molding on the wall as well as to walls supplied with this decoration.
Vith this object in view my invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be specifically described hereinafter, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a hook constructed in accordance with Iny invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a slightly-modified form of a hook.
Referring now to the drawings by referencenumerals, l designates a plate approximately V-shaped and bent up at its lower or narrower end to form a hook 2 to receive the picturecord. The wider or top edge of this plate is bent forward through an angle less than a right angle to form an extension 3, and it is then bent back upon itself at 4 to provide a guiding-lip 5, having a plurality of grooves 6 in the upper edge and in line with the perforations 7 at the bend 4 and those designated by the reference-numeralS in the plate l. Brads or pins 9 can thus be inserted in the perforations 7, and as their points engage the grooves 6 they will be guided through the perforations 8. A series of slight taps with a hammer will drive said brads into the wall, and as they are guided at a slanta better purchase will be had than were they driven at right angles to the plate l.
By reference to Fig. 2 it will be observed that the points of the brads project but a slight distance through the perforations 8.
This will permit the points of said brads to be impressed in the wall or other support by merely pressing the plate l and the entire device will be secured as above described. By reason of the arrangement above referred to the points of the brads may be inserted in the wall or support without marring or defacing the same.
By reason of the peculiar formation of the hook and the inclination of the brads or pins the entire strain will be downward, and it will thus be apparent that all liability of the nails drawing will be obviated.
In the modification Fig. 3 the upper eX- tension is somewhat narrower than that shown in the construction illustrated in Figs. l and 2. This form of hook will be employed for small or light pictures, and if deemed desirable the grooves 6 can be dispensed with.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, I do not limit myself thereto, as l am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
I claiml. A picture-hook comprising a plate with a lower hooked end, a'forwardly-projecting extension at its upper end bent back upon itself to form aguiding-lip, said extension and plate, being provided with alining perforations for the insertion of pins or nails.
2. As a new article of manufacture a picture-hook, comprisin ga plate having a hooked end, a forwardly-projecting extension at the other end bent back upon itself to form a guiding-lip, the free edge of said lip having a plurality of grooves alining with perforations in the extension and the plate so as to guide a securing pinor nail therein.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM EDMUNDSON.
