To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELLEN O. DAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and. State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Hat-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to a hat holder and the object thereof is the provision of a simple practical and inexpensive device for holding ladies hats in theaters and vari ous other places where women are accustomed to remove their hats temporarily; the hat holder according to my invention being so constructed that when fastened thereto the hat is held in position against the wall or back of a chair, or any other device to which the hat holder is secured.

In carrying out my invention, I preferably employ a cylindrical member, means for securing the same in position on the back of a chair or on a wall or any other suitable or desirable place, a device adapted to rest normally against the end of the cylindrical member and to which a hat may be secured, and means whereby the said device is normally maintained in position, may be withdrawn to attach a hat, and is automatically returned to position after the hat is attached to said device and the same is released.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved hat holder, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof.

designates a cylindrical member made of metal or any other suitable material, the surface of which may be finished in any desired manner. The cylindrical member 10 is adapted to be secured to a support 11 which as will be understood may be the back of a theater chair, a door, or wall, or any other device by means of the screws 12 or otherwise.

lVithin the cylindrical member 10 I employ a weighted plunger indicated at 13 which is adapted to fit and slide within the said cylindrical member. I also employ a ball member indicated at 14 which as shown in the drawing, is preferably flattened and prepared with a peripheral band. indicated at 15.

The flattened ball member 14 is preferably made of Wire gauze of suitable mesh or any other similar material through which a hat pin may be readily passed.

The ball member 14 or preferably the peripheral band 15 thereof is connected to one end of a braided chain or cord 16; the opposite end of the chain 16 being suitably secured to the upper end of the weighted plunger 13, preferably as shown by being secured in a lug 17 on the top of the plunger.

Now as will be apparent, in the use of the hereinbefore described hat holder, the parts thereof are normally in the position shown in the drawing and when it is desired to secure a hat in position by using the holder, the ball member 14 thereof is withdrawn to the necessary extent, thereby through the cord 16 raising the plunger 13 to the top of the cylinder if necessary. Thereupon the hat pin or hat pins may be passed through the hat and through the gauze portion of the ball 14 to secure the hat to the ball and the hat released so that the plunger may by its own weight descend to the bottom of the cylinder, and in so doing carry the ball member 14 and the hat secured thereto to the desired position wherein the hat will be maintained against the back of a chair, wall, door or other place.

While my improved hat holder is particularly adapted for use in theaters and like places, it will also be understood that it may be used to equal advantage in any place where it is desired to support a hat either temporarily or for any length of time.

I claim as my invention:

1. A. hat holder comprising a cylindrical member, means for securing the same in position, a gravity plunger in the cylindrical member, a flattened ball made of gauze material and to which a hat may be secured, a rigid material surface secured to the ball, and

flexible connection between and respectively connected to said surface and the plunger.

2. A hat holder comprising a cylindrical member, means for securing the same in position against the back of a chair, a gravity plunger in the said cylindrical member, a flattened ball of gauze or similar material having a peripheral band secured thereto, and a braided chain connecting the said band of the flattened ball and the gravity plunger.
