accompanying drawings in which Figure l is aside elevation of my dev ce; Fig. 2 a
horizontal section on the plane of the line- 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a, modified form of suspension member; and Fig. 4 a modified form of weight which maybe used. Similar reference letters indicate similar partsv in the several views.
The device is, in general, of well known form comprising an umbrella-shaped member A, which 'may be of any suitable material, andof a size to present a surface which will give sufficient resistance to the air when falling. To the edge of the member A, I
secure a number of suspension members B.
.In Fig. 1 these members are formed. of
pieces of wire bent so as to form an eye at the upper end, and adapted to be secured to i the member A by stitching. The lower ends of the suspension members are secured, in any suitable way, to a ring C of relatively small diameter. As shown, the ring C has holes punched or formed therein, and the lower ends of the suspension members B are passed through said holes and bent or turned back so as to form a loop embracing the ring, as indicated in Fig. 2. The ring 0 has a cross-bar cfrom which is suspended a weight D. members I may make them of the form shown in Fig. 3, in which a part, only such as the lower part b", is made of wire and the upper part b of a suitable flexible cord.
The rlgid suspension members, however, pre
vent any entanglement and permit the device I to open easily, so as to scent.
The attaching ring and weight may be made in one piece as shown in Fig. 4, that permit a proper dechutes, of which the following is a specifica- Instead of rigid suspension Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 6, 191 *7 is, the weight may bemade of a ball D to which the attaching ring C is secured.
In use, the suspension members are, or may be, drawn together and the device thrown or projected upward. When it reaches the limit of its movement the device will right itself, that is, the weight attached thereto is sufliciently heavy to cause the parachute to descend until the member opens, when the descent will be checked by the resistance of the air.
The device is intended primarily as a toy and can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a parachute, an umbrella shaped member having rigid suspension memberssald r1g1d suspenslon memfastened thereto, hers loosely connected to a ring, means for keeping the suspension members from sli ping around said ring with respect to tl fe relative position of each other member about said ring, a bar forming a diameter to said ring and a weight suspended from said bar. 'In a parachute, an umbrella shaped member having rigid suspension members, means for flexibly connecting said suspension members to said umbrella shaped memher, a ring pierced with holes, the lower ends of said suspension members being looped through said holes and about a circumfe'rence of said ring, and a weight interal with said ring. 3. In a parachute, an umbrella shaped member having rigid suspension members, a ring of relatively small diameter having holes therein through which the lower ends of said suspension members are passed so as to secure said ring and members together, and a weight suspended from said ring.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto JUSTUS M. SMITH. Witnesses:
ETHEL G. MCOLUSKEY, Jnsros SMITH.
