To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY R. KoNIKorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the borough of Bronx, county of Bronx, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Adjustable Dress-Forms, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to adjustable and collapsible dress forms of the class used by dress-makers, and one of the main objects thereof is to provide a frame for supporting the bust sections which consists of a diaphragm, neck-plate, and connecting rods comprising a unit, said diaphragm being itself supported by the conventional base and telescopic rod, this construction being of great advantage over the hitherto known method of suspending the bust portion and skirt portion'from the neck-plate and which, in turn, is mounted on the telescopic rod; in the latter form the bust and skirt portions may sway from side to side and, if the weight of material on one side of the'dress form be heavier than on the opposite side, a permanent list results, preventing proper adjustment of the length of a skirt, whereas in my form the entire weight is carried by the diaphragm located within the hip sections and no list of the dress form can occur to prevent proper fitting of theskirt length.

A further object is to provide means for adj ustably locking the bust sections together of such form as to be easily operable by persons entirely lacking in mechanical skill, and wherefrom no parts may be detached and possibly lost;

A further object is to provide absolutely independent adjustable locking means for the separate neck sections -not dependent upon a threaded knob as-in the dress forms known to me; in this old form each neck section has an inwardly directed horizontal arm thereon resting upon the neckplate, a supplemental plate resting upon. all of the arms, and a threaded knob for locking-said plates together with the arms therebetween but, as soon as this knob is loosened, all of the neck sections sag outwardly and it is difficult to readjust all of them at one time previous to locking them in desired positions by the said knob; in my form, however, the knob and supplemental plate, ifused, may be entirely removed without affecting the neck sections in the least, each neck section being then individually adjustable.

A further object is to provide a simple and positive adjusting device for each hi section whereby it may be vertically ad usted individually, and a still further object is to provide a skirt portion of the utmost simplicity but the adjustable sections of which move freely with the respective hip sections to which they are attached.

My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form apart, in which like characters refer to like parts in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a dress form constructed in accordance with'my in yention, partly broken away and partially 1n section;

In the drawings forming a part of this application I haveshown a. dress form comprising a bust portion 12, a skirt portion 13 dependent therefrom, a base 1 1, and a telescopic standard or rod 15 secured to a crosshead 16 of channeled, stamped, sheet metal, which is adapted to be locked within a r cess 17 in a diaphragm 18 by means of a set-screw 19, said diaphragm having two vertical rods fixed thereto'which are in turn fixed to a neck-plate 20, said rods being designated 21. i v

The rods 21pass through suitably spaced holes in the cross-head 16, as shown at 22, Fig.10, and it will be seen that the standard'15 is maintained in rigid parallelism with respect to the rods 21, although the cross-head 16 may slide along the rods 21 when the set-screw 19 is loosened, to enable the busu portion to move toward the 'base 14 until the cross-head 16 rests against the under side of the neck-plate 20, said crosshead being imprisoned on the rods 21.

As shown in Fig. 7, the neck-plate 20 has a plurality of guides 23 for radially adjustable arms 24 arranged at quadrant points in the form shown, each of said guides having a spring clip 25 thereover provided with a pin 26 on the under side thereof adapted to enter any one of a plurality of holes 27 in the respective arms 24'to lock thesame in desired positions, each of said arms being secured to a neck section 28 of which there are four in. the present form. I may, if desired, arrangea supplemental plate 29 over the guides 23 and a knob 30 for holding this plate in position, but these are more for appearances than for any necessity therefor, as the individual arms 24 remain in adjusted positions irrespective of the plate 29 and knob 30.

In the form illustrated, the rear neck sections extend to the waist line of the bust portion, shown in Fig. 11, whereas the front neck sections extend only to thechest line, as shown in Fig. 1, a breast section 31 being suspended from each front neck section by means of a slide-bar 32,. said front neck sections being joined by a slide-bar 33, said breast sections by slide-bars 34,v and said rear neck and back sections by means of a. slide-bar 35.v

Joined to the back sections 28, by means of slide-bars 36, are rear shoulder sections 37, Fig. 11, extending from the shoulder to the waist line, and joined to the front neck sections are front shoulder sections'38, by means of slide-bars 39, which extend only to the chest line, Fig. 1. Joined to the respective breast sections 31, by means of slide-bars 40, are side sections 41 which are in line with the respective front shoulder sections 38, and may be joined thereto if desired, although not so shown.

Depending from each back section, Fig. 11, and connected therewith by means of a slide-bar 42, is a rear hip sect-ion 43; depending fromeach rear shoulder section37, by means of a slide-bar 44, is a rear side hip section 45 depending from each side section 41, by means offa slide-bar 46, is a front side hip section 47; and depending from each breasti section 31, by means of slide-bars 48, is a front hip section 49, all of these slide-bars being of adjustable form with respect to the corresponding bust sections, in a manner to be later described.

A description of one of the slide-bars 34 joining the breast sections 31 willsufiice for all of the slide-bars, as they are all alike. The slide-bar 34 is riveted at 50, Fig. 3, to one of the sections and passes through a guide-plate 51 on the other section, a spring clip 52 being secured to said guide-plate and carrying a pin on its under side adapted to enter any one of a plurality of holes in the slide-bar 34, the pin 53 being shown in Fig. 4, and the holes 54 in Fig. 3, and I may provide a knob or handle 55 for the spring clip 52; when the clip 52 is drawn outwardly to release the pin 53 from the particular hole 54in which it had been engaged, the slide-bar may be moved to adjust the breast sections toward or from each other, and, when the desired adjustment has been attained, the pin 53 may be entered into the proper hole 54 and the said breast sections are locked in desired relationship. This description applies to all the sections and their connecting slide-bars, and it will thus be seen that any of the bust sections may be quickly and easily adjusted with respect to its connected section, and, there being no detachable parts to the slide-bars and connections, no portions thereof can be lost or mislaid.

By reference to Figs. 1, 8, 9 and 10, it will be seen that I provide a plurality of radially adjustable slide-bars 56, one for each of the hipsections, having a plurality of holes 57 therein adapted for engagement with a pin 58 on a spring clip 59, and guided in guide plates 60 in the manner already described, whereby each of said hip sections may be adjusted radially of the diaphragm 18; these slide-bars 56 actually support the respective hip sections and, thereby, the bust sections over the hip sections, the diaphragm thus sustaining the entire weight of the dress form, by means of the said slide-bars and the connected bars 21'and neck-plate 20.

It will be noted that the hip sections are vertically adjustable with respect to the connected bust sections thereover, and I must, therefore, provide means for adjusting the hip sections vertically with respect to the diaphragm and the slide-bars 56; each of these means consists of a vertical elbow 61, on the respective slide-bar 56, having a plurality of holes 62 therein adapted, each, to receive a headed screw 63 slidable in a channeled guide 64 and adapted to be locked with respect to said guide by means of a wing-nut 65; when said nutis loosened, the hip section may be adjusted vertically with respect to the respective slide-bar, afterwhich the wing-nut may be again tightened to lock the parts together.

Riveted'to each of the hip sections, at the lower edge thereof, is a guide 66 for a. vertical slidable strip 67 in turn riveted to the inner surfaces of upper and lower horizontal band sections 68 and 69, respectively, supplemental vertical strips 70 being riveted to the outer surfaces of said bands and to respective strips 67, and 70, and band seetions 68, 69, 71, and 7 2 collectively forming a. skirt section joined to the adjacent skirt section by means of a strap 73 secured to the end of each of the band sections of the outer skirt section and encircling the respective band sections of the inner skirt sectlon,

as clearly shown in Fig. 6; this sectional ar- 7 rangement of the skirt portion of the dress form allows of diametrical adjustment of the skirt portion with the diametral adjustment of the lower part of the bust portion, no attempt being made to provide locks for the skirt sections, as the frictional engagement thereof is sufii'cient under ordinary conditions, although suitable locking means might be employed.

It will thus be seen thatI provide a dress form which possesses great flexibility in adjustment but rigidity when adjusted, where in adequate adjustable slide-bars are provided and means for locking the same in adjusted positions, wherein the weight is not supended from the neck-plate but is carried by the diaphragm, and which is also 001- lapsible by telescoping the skirt portion over the bust portion. The skirt portion illustrated is of the general form shown in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,122,129, issued to M. A. Konikofi' and myself on the 22nd day of December, 191d, but I may also adapt the form shown and described in a co-pending application filed May 18, 1915, Ser. No. 28,855, and which consists of telescopic sections whereby the bust portion is only partially inclosed when the dress form is collapsed, for storage or shipment.

WVhile I have shown certain perferred details of construction, I do not seek to confine myself thereto, but may make changes thereover, within the scope of the following claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An adjustable dress form, comprising a base, an adjustable standard, a diaphragm carried thereby, vertical rods carof separable upper bust sections and lower hip sections and means for locking the same in desired relationship, and a skirt ortion adjustable with said bust portion an adapted to be telescoped thereover.

2. In a device of the class described, a neck-plate, a bust composed of a plurality of sections and means for locking the same in desired relationship with each other, a horizontal arm on one of said sections extended inwardly over said neck-plate, a guide on said neck-plate for said arm, said arm being provided with a plurality of holes therein, and a spring clip on said neckplate having a pin adapted to enter one of said holes to look said section in desired relationship with respect to said neck-plate.

3. An adjustable dress form comprising a bust portion consisting of a diaphragm, a neck-plate, a pair of parallel rods vertically disposed within said bust portion and immovably connected to the diaphragm and neck plate respectively, a plurality of separable sections, means for adjustably connecting the said sections to the diaphragm and neck-plate respectively and with each other; a skirt portion adjustably connected to said bust portion at or near its lower end, and a standard having an adjustable connection with the vertical rods of the bust portion.

4. In an adjustable dress form a vertically adjustable standard and a support thereupon, angle brackets adjustably secured to said support, a section adjustably secured to each of said angle brackets and means whereby said sections may be moved radially and vertically upon said brackets.
