Description

STATES PA ENT OFFIcn.
M.J.SANFOR,D, OF FREDONIA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forminepart of Letters Patent No. 92,213, dated July 6', 1869.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,-M. J. SANFORD, of Fredonia, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Washing-Machines; and I. do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine applied to an ordinary wash-tale; Fig. 2, across section of the same; Fig. 3, a view showing the metallic bearings for the bed-rollers.
Like letters of reibrence indicate correspond ing partsin all the figures.
My improvement is of that class attaching to the top of the tub by means of a cross-bar; and the invention consists in e'ombining with the cross-bar adj usiable clamps ot' peculiar construction, which will adapt the device to dit'lercnt-sized tubs, and at the same time allow it-to be tightened in place.
'In the drawings, A indicates-the cross-bar, which extends across the top of the tub from side to side and holds the depending legs B B,
which, in turn, sustain thenwashing-rollers' O I) l) .l').
These rollers are of ordinaryconstructiou and arrangement the-large-one, 0 having a shaft projecting out over the top of the tub and operated by a crank, a, whi la the small ones,
1) D, rest in metallic bearings b 1), extending half way through and filled with Babbitt metal. The journals of the uppe' roller have sliding blocks 0 c resting over them, pressed down by a spring or springs, d, by which means the desired elasticity of the roller is produced.
The novel feature in my invention consists in the manner of connecting the cross-bar A with the top of the tub.
This is accomplished as folflows; At one end a rest or block, E, is ma leli 'ast o the bar or to the leg B. At the opp site a similar rest, E, is connected with the bar, but is made to adjust out and in by means of an encircling loop, f, which slides easily over the top; These rests have each a notch, g, in the bottom of suitable form to fit on the edge of the tub, and a rod, G, is connected with each which hooks at the bottom to catch H, secured to the side of the tub, and at the top a nut, i,'draws the rod tight. When thus clamped in place, the whole machine is fast, and the turning of the crank runs the clothes back and forth between the rollers. The rod G, connected with sliding rest E, of course adjusts with it and rests in a slot, 70, in the bar made for the purpose.
I am aware that washing-rollers have before been made to rest inside the tub, as in M. A. Richardsons patent; but in that case the machine proper is attached to the bottom of the tub. By substituting the bar, Iattach it ina much more effective manner, while at the same time the rollers depend sufliciently to rest in the water. The most obvious novelty, however, is the combinatlon with the bar, of the rests E E made adjustable so as to accommodate to different-sized tubs, and also the rods G G and the catches H H, by which they are secured. This arrangement of parts I believe to be new with myself. I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of the adjustable rests E E, rods G G, and catches H H, with the bar A, when the said parts are employed in connection with the depending rollers G D D, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed 7 my name in thepresence of two subscribing
