IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS FOR WASHI NG-M ACHINESL Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,946, dated May 30, 1876; application filed February 27, 1835.

To all whom itv may concern:

Be it known that I, MELVIN N. LOVELL, of Erie, in the county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Device for Attaching Washing-Machines to Tubs, of which the following is a specification: i

The nature of my invention consists in providing a device for suspending and attaching that class of Washing-machines that are used in an ordinary tub to the same without permanently attaching to the said tub any part of the machine or attaching device. To properly attach such a washing-machine to a tub it is necessary that the machine should be placed at or near the middle of the tub, and

The above are the objects which I accent plish by my device.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention as follows:

Figure 1 is a section of a tub, showing a machine attached thereto by my device. A is the tub; B and B, the machine; 0 and 0, my attaching device. Fig. 2 is a segment of the tub A, with the part 0 of my device, and the side piece B of the-machine. Fig. 3shows the side piece B of the machine, and the part O of my device.

The device is as follows: It is of two parts, 0 and O, of which 0 may be called the clamp, and C the rest. The part (J, or clamp, isattached to the machine at the crank end, and the part 0, or rest, at the opposite end. The part 0 is, as before stated, shown in Fig. 2. It is of metal, (malleable casting preferred;) it

has two. arms or prongs, on each of which is a clamp, adjusted by the thumb-screw D. These clamps hook over the sides of the tub, and when properly adjusted or set the device is firmly attached to the tub. The object in having two clamps or points of bracing is to prevent rocking or tilting when the crank is operated. (If, as is the case in some machines, the power is applied, not by a crank, but by a rock-lever, or similar device, it may be found necessary to use the part 0, or its equivalent, at-both ends of the machine. Except in such cases, I believe, all that is necessary is the rest 0'.) Supporting the other end of the machine is the part 0, which is simply a bar extending out over theedges of the tub. It is sufficiently long to be certain of spanning far enough to rest on the edge of any ordinarysized tub. This bar or part 0 may be pronged so as to give two resting-points, if desired. The parts (3 and O are so curved as to bring the machine down considerably below the top of the tub, so as to bring it in contact with the water. I attach the parts 0 and C to the sides of the machines B and B by bolts 11, which are either cast solid with the parts or not, as may be desired. That part of the parts 0 and O which comes in. contact with the machine, must, of course, be varied in form to suit the form of the machine at the attaching-point. With this variation my device can be used for attaching any style of the class of machines named to the tub, and that without attaching permanently any blocks or rests, or catches, or any part of the attaching device to the tub.

What I claim is as follows:

The combination of the parts 0 O, and

frame B B, for attaching or adjusting a washingmachine within a tub, substantially as shown.
