' A. M. STARR. LINE GHALKEB. APPLICATION FILED P33. 5, 1908.

UNTTED @FTTQE.
ANDREW M. STARR, OF LANKERSHIM, CALIFORNIA.
LIIIE-CHALKEB.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW M. STARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lankershiin, in the county 01' Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Line-Chalker, of which the follow ing is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide cheap, siinple, economical, convenient and satisfactory means for marking chalk lines.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an appliance embodying the invention ready for use. Fig. 2 is transverse section of the same on line Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a section in a plane parallel with the chalk line. Fig. 4 is a plan omitting the lid. Fig. 5 is a view of the hinged end. Fig. 6 is a view oi the clasp end. Fig. 7 is a view 01' the blanks for forming the case or chalk box and the cover therefor.
1 designates a box or receptacle perinanently closed on five sides and provided on the sixth side with a lid 2 which has tangs 3 at one end adapted to extend through perrelations 4 at one end of the receptacle to hinge the lid thereto, and provided with a tang 5 at the other end of the lid to engage a retainer 6 punched outwardly from the material of the end 7 of the receptacle so that the lid, when closed, will form a tight closure to complete the retainer that is to hold the chalk for the marking line 8.
The box 1 is stamped from. sheet metal,
r and comprises the side wall 13, the bottom wall 10 extending fro-2n and formed integral with the side wall 13, the side wall 14 in opposition to the wall 13 and forrn d integral with the opposite edge oi the bottom 10, the end wall 7 formed integral with the wall 13, the end wall 15 in opposition to the end wall 7 and integral with the side wall 13, and the lid 2 formed separately.
9 designates guides {or the marking line inside the box, the same being preferably cylindrical and formed of three tubes extending across the receptacle and secured to the sides thereof, by means of solder or otherwise, at the discretion of the maker.
I prefer to employ three rigid, fixed guides 9, two of said guides being located near the lower corners of the box, and the third guide being located near the lid and at the center of the box, as shown in Fig. 3. The guides are sections of tubing mounted rig- Specification of Letters Eatent.

idly in the box so as to be held against rotation and so as to apply tension to the chalkline. The guides are round and smooth so that the chalk-line will readily run under considerable tension.
The guides 9 are preferably arranged as shown in Fig. 2, in which two guides are located on the level with, and close to, but spaced apart from the bottom 10 of the receptacle; and the other one of the guides 9 is located near the open top of the receptacle,
to which the lid is fitted.
The ends are each provided at the open side or top of the receptacle, with a notch 11, through which the marking line 8 is led, thence past each other, over the solitary or single guide cylinder or tube 9, and thence down toward the bottoan oi the receptacle, and reversely under and then over the lower guides, where an intermediate bight b 01' the niarkhig line extends across and over both of the lower guides as shown in Fig. 2.
The ends of the receptacle are each indented inwardly at the notches therein respectively to form lips 12, over which the line may run, the same being attached to serve the double purpose of resisting the wear of the line as it runs through the notches, and also to serve as lenders to prevent escape of the powdered chalk c with which the receptacle may be charged for chalking the marking line.
The receptacle 1 may be formed of one or more pieces within the discretion oi the maker.
In the drawing, a form of blank is shown, capable of being bent up to form the receptacle. I do not limit the invention to any specific form of blank or blanks to form the receptacle.
In practical use, the receptacle will be charged with chalk in some desirable form, either in one or more luinps or in a powder, so that when the marking line is drawn through the box, or the box is drawn alon the line, the line will drag through and will become charged with the chalk substance, so that when the line is applied to the face to be marked, and is snapped in the usual way, such face will be marked with the chalk line.
I prefer to fill the box full or nearly full of powdered chalk so that all of the line within the box will be iinmersed in the chalk, and it requires a considerable length of line to reach through the box around the guides, as shown in Fig. 3.
What I claim is 1. A line-chalker comprising a receptacle,
two rigid fixed guides near the lower corners of the receptacle, a third rigid fixed guide near the top of the receptacle, said receptacle being adapted to contain powdered chalk, inlet and outlet guides at the top of the receptacle and a line extending'into the receptacle over the inlet-guide, then around the rigid guides within the receptacle and out i over the outlet guide.
2. A line-chalker comprising a suitable chalk-box having openings for the passage of the line, and a plurality of fixed rigid line-guides mounted within the box, and a line running through the box and around the guides, said guides being arranged to carry the line to all parts of the box, and said box 12 extending one from each end wall, the lid 2 formed separately, the tangs 3 extending from the lid 2 to engage in the perforations 4, and the tang 5 extending from the lid 2 to engage the retainer 6.
4. A line-chalker comprising the side I 5. In a chalk-liner, a boxl'orined of'sheet metal and having notches 11 at the upper edges of the ends, the lips 12 extending inwardly from the notches and forming bearings for the line, and the rigid line-guides 9, two of said guides being near the lower corners of the box and one of said guides being at the upper center of the box.
In testiznony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles California this 24th day of January 1908.
ANDREW M. STARR.
In presence 01"' JAMES R. TOWNSEND, M. BEULAH TOWNSEND.
