JAMES C. LAFFERTY, OI LOWMAN, WEST VIRGINIA.
CASING OR PIPE WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 27, 1909.
Application filed July 24, 1908. Serial No. 445,238.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES C. LAFFERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowman, in the county of Wetzel and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Casing or Pipe Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wrench for gripping pipes employed in deep wells, the ob ject of the invention being a wrench of this kind which can be employed for screwing and unscrewing well casings and designed to replace the usual rope method.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my wrench in position, partly broken away and shown in section, and a casing being also shown in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my wrench.
In constructing this device I employ two curved sections 1 which are hinged together as shown at 2, said sections forming jaws which when closed form a ring which. surrounds the casing. The inner faces of these jaws are recessed and in the recesses are secured gripping plates 3 provided with toothed or roughened faces to cause them to firmly grip the sides of the casing. These plates 3 preferably project outwardly from the inner faces of the jaws 1. To the free end of one jaw is pivotally secured a metal link 4 and the free end of the other jaw carries a laterally projecting saddle 5 formed integral with the jaw and forming a concave outer face.
In operation the jaws are placed about the casing 6 to be tightened, and the usual pole or bar is passed through the link l and bears upon the concave faceof the saddle 5, and with the bar as a lever the ring formed by the jaws 1 is rotated, rotating the casing gripped by it. It will be obvious that an appliance of this kind can be fitted upon the casing and remove d from it much more quickly than the casing could be wrapped with the necessary amount of rope.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the kind described comprising two curved jaws hinged together, said jaws forming a circle when their free ends are brought together, a laterally extending saddle having a concave base, and a link pivotally connected to the free end of the other jaw, said link receiving a pole, and said saddle forming a bearing for the pole, the inner face of said jaws being provided with suitable gripping teeth.
