WILSON NEWCOMB, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN Pl PE-WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,639, dated August 19, 1879; application filed December 4, 1878.
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, WILsoN NEwcoMB, of
' the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland,
have invented certain Improvements in Pipe- Wrenches, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of mysaid invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain improvements in a self-adjusting pipe-wrench, or one that automatically adjusts itself to pipes of various sizes; and consists in the novel construction of certain parts of the said wrench, as will hereinafter fully appear.
1n the description of the said invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanyin g drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is an exterior side view of the improved wrench applied to a piece of pipe, and Fig. 2 an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the views.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, A A are bars, pivoted to the handle B at a a. The bar Ais hooked or curved to partially encircle the pipe 0, and it is either provided with teeth, as shown in the drawings, or plain and without teeth, asmay be preferred. The bar A is practically straight, and is necessarily provided with one or more teeth at its free end, as shown, to enable it to take a firm hold or gripe of the pipe.
In some cases it may be deemed desirable to have the toothed end of the bar A removable, for the purpose of substituting a new end piece therefor when the teeth become much worn.
A link, D, is used to prevent excessive separation of the bars A A. The said link is pivoted to the bar A, and rests loosely over and upon the bar A, which provision enables it to clear itself from binding, which would occur were it rigidly attached to the bar A,
as the angles relatively borne to each other by the respective parts were changed in operating the device.
It will be understood that the handle B is practically a lever, which, in the operation of the tool, forces the straight bar firmly in contact with the pipe.
I do not claim a wrench in which the handle is provided with a cross-bar to which the bars are pivoted; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The bars A A, pivoted ata a to the Handle B, combined with the link D, pivoted to the bar A, and embracing and sliding on the bar A, as specified.
