IMPROVEMENT IN ROPECLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,803, dated October 1, 1872.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osIAH G'. WINGER, of OilOity, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a -new and Improved Rope-Clamp to be used. in boring artesian wells and for like purposes; and I do j hereby declarethat the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the -letters of reference marked thereon.
In` boring artesian or oil wells the boring* tools are attached to a long rope, the end thereof passing over a pulley at the top of the derrick. This rope is attached, a few feet above the ground, to ate1nperscrew,? which screw is connected with the walking beam77 of the en gineri g.77 As the well is deepened the rope below the temper-screw must be lengthened to correspond with the depth ofthe well.
. My invention relates to the clamping devices to which the temper-screw is attached, and by which the weight of the rope and boring-tools is sustained during operation. The invention consists in providing a rope-clamp of improved construction whereby the clamp may be more easily applied and the rope be held more se- .curely in the required position, and by means of which all wrapping, heretofore used to protect the rope or cable, is dispensed with, and a great saving of time is thereby eii'ected; said improved clamp consisting oftwo corrugated jaws hinged together at one side, and provided with projecting arms or levers projecting from Jthe opposite side sufficiently to give considerable leverage in clamping the rope between the jaws, the levers being secured together by means of a movable strap or stirrup and'set-screw, all as hereinafter more fully set forth. j l

D is a stirrup, attache-d to the end of the' lever B by a pin, so that it may be turned back in the position shown in Fig. l when the clamp is to be opened. C is a screw, which, when the clamps are shut, as at Fig. 2, and the stirrup D turned over the end of the lever A, may be screwed down on the end of the lever A, thus closing the clamp tightly around the rope; or, if it is desired, a screw-bolt may be passed through the ends of the levers A and B, thus screwing them together.- The inner or concave surface of the jaws w w w w are corrugated to correspond with the strands or twist of the rope, as shown at H, Fig. 1. By this construction it will be seen that,
.when the clamps are shut together around the rope, it is impossible for the rope to slip, and vat the same time the rope, fitting the concave surface of the jaws, is not liable to be-cut by the clamp.
` What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isas follows, to wit: f
As a new article of manufacture and trade, a rope-clamp, consisting of two hinged jaws, w fw, corrugated as described, and having the levers A B, stirrup l), and set-screw C, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
