PIPE-HOLDER.
Application filed 'March 11, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoRNn E. FERGUSON, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Parkland, in the county of Macleod and Province of Alberta, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a construction which will be used for holding pipes while removing a pump from a well or while piping the well after drilling. In fact the same construction may be used in lowering pipe or raising the same where couplings have to be made or disassembled.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive construction which will grip the pipe and hold it.
l Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
Figure l is a side view of my invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my invention, Fig. 3 is a side view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is an end view,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of one of the jaws, and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of the holding means for one of the jaws,
Fig. 7 shows a modified form.
Referring to the drawings like numerals designate like parts in the various drawings.
7 indicates a base having an opening 8. 9 are side members formed of angle irons suitably riveted to the base 7 leaving a section between the upward portions in which the hereinafter mentioned jaws are adapted to be hingedly mounted.
At one end the upward extended portions of the side members 9 are provided with oppositely positioned openings to receive a bolt 10, while at the opposite end they are provided with angular positioned slots 11 in which av pin 12 is adapted to be positioned. This pin 12 is provided with a short length of chain 14 which attaches it to the side of one of the sides 9, so that this, when removed will not get lost.
15 indicates a set of jaws, each having one end bent as at 16 to fit around either the bolt 10 or the pin 12. The opposite end of each Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 112, 1921. Serial N o. i 51,53 i.
of the jaws 15 is bifurcated as at 17 and its outer side is provided with outwardly eX tending lugs 18, which lugs prohibit the falling of the jaw in between the sides 9. The inner face of the bifurcated ends may be serrated as at 19, so as to provide a full gri ping surface there. The jaws may be any desired length-but will always be sufficient so that their inner ends extend inside the circumference of the opening 8 when the lugs 18 are resting on the upper side of the sides 9.
The holder will be fitted over the end of the pipe a0 and to assist in this fitting, it will be seen that the jaw hinged on the pin 12 may e removed. The jaws, being longer than the horizontal distance between the side of the pipe and the pin or bolt, will have their inner ends jammed against the pipe and thus hold it in a desired position against outward movement.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood, and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
l. A pipe holder consisting of a plate, an opening in said plate to receive a pipe therethrough, side members for said plate, a set of jaws hingedly mounted in said side members and having their inner ends extending inwardly inside the circumference of said opening and said inner ends being provided with gripping means for holding said pipe, the pivot of one of said jaws being removably supported.
2. A pipe holder consisting of a plate provided with an opening to receive a pipe thercthrough, side members suitably attached to said plate, jaws hingedly mounted between said side members and having their inner ends adapted to grip said pipe, the pivot of one of said jaws being mounted in angularly-positioned slots.
3. A pipe holder consisting of a plate, an opening in said plate to receive a pipe therethrough, side members attached to said. plate, a pair of jaws hinged at their outer ends in said side members, the inner ends of said jaws being adapted to grip said pipe, the free ends of said jaws having outwardly extended lugs to prevent said free ends of said jaws from dropping between said side members when not being used.
4;. A pipe holder consisting of a plate, an
opening in said plate to receive a pipe therethrough, side members attached to said plate, a pair of jaws hinged at their outer ends in said side members, the inner ends of said 5 jaws being adapted to grip said pipe, the
jaws being removably mounted in said side 10 members.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
I LORNE E. FERGUSON.
WVitnesses E. C. WEBSTER, E. E. LIWILLS.
