Description

(ModeL) N. PURDY.
. PIPE TONGS. No. 247 406. Patented Sept. 20,1881.
nil
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN PURDY, OF FALL BROOK, PENNSYLVANIA.
PlPE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,406, dated September 20, 1881.
' Application filed July 15, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN PURDY, of Fall Brook, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Pipe-Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in linking thejaws of the tongs together at their outer ends and linking one of the jaws permanently to the end of the handle or lever, the other jaw being adapted to be connected to the lever so as to grasp upon the pipe by means of a loop or similar device hinged or pivoted upon the end of the lever, and adapted to be placed over the end of said jaw, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view of my improved tongs. Fig. 2 is a view of the edge or back of the tongs, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 00 w of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the handle or lever; and B B represent the jaws, which are serrated upon their inner faces as shown. The
jaw B is attached permanently to the end of the lever by means of eye a, formed on the end of the lever and the hook 1) formed on the end of the jaw, and one end of the jaw B is permanently attached to the outer end of the jaw B by means of the strong link d, which is of sufficient length to permit the jaw B to be placed over and upon the pipe to be turned. The other end of this jaw is formed into the hook h, so that when the jawis placed over and 3 5 upon the pipe the swinging loop or link D, which is bolted to the lever by the holtj, may
be placed over the hook h, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus secure the tongs upon the pipe. When the tongs are thus attached to the pipe, upon power being applied to the lever the jaws will automatically grasp upon the pipe by the action of the links, and thus relieve the operator of the necessity of griping the tongs upon the pipe by hand-power, as with the tongs of 5 ordinary construction; and when the lever is brought to position for taking a new hold upon the pipe the jaws of their own weight will turn upon the pipe to the proper position, ready to again grasp the pipe firmly when poweris again applied to the lever.
These tongs are strong, durable, cheap of construction, and, as appears from the above description, easily and quickly operated, and they are not liable to get out of order.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the lever A, provided with the eye a and pivoted link D at its lower end, of the jaws B B, having at their upper ends the hooks b and h, and connected together at their lower ends by link d, substantiallyas herein shown and described.
NATHAN PURDY.
