UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AIiONZO H. GREEN, OF CLEAR LAKE, IOWA.
GRAPPLAEFOR HOSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,788, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed February 29, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo H. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clear Lake, in the county of Oerro Gordo and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grapples for Hose, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device closed. Fig. 2 is a like view with jaws open. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the device as in use on a fire-engine or water-hose.
This invention relates to grapples or tongs; and the novelty consists in the construction of the several parts, whereby a cheap, strong, and serviceable device is produced, designed, chiefly, for handling water orfire-engine hose, all as will now be more fully set out and eX- plained.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes one part of the grapple or tongs, and B the other part, suitably pivoted together at'c, so as to be readily opened or closed. Fixed to the lower or jaw ends of each is a curved piece tubular in section, D, of suitable shape and size to adapt it to fit 'over the hose or other article it is to be used upon. The upper end ofA may have a handle, a, and also the part A may be provided at any suitable point with a link, a, to catch upon the upper end of the part B of the grapple, so as to hold it shut when in use.
The method of using the grapple is clearly can more securely hold the hose by means of such a device than by any other that I know of. To aid the firemanin thus taking the hose up a ladder, there is provided a shoulder-strap, F, fitted at any convenient point, as in the eye a, or in any desired way to one or the other part or jaw of the grapple. The fireman places this strap over his shoulder. Thus, as he mounts the ladder, he can very easily lift a long piece of hose filled with water.
It will be noted that in the use of my device there is not the slightest danger of harming the hose, as the curved jaws fit smoothly.
over the hose, and while they can be pressed down upon it as firmly as can possibly be required, they will not disfigure it in the least.
Having now described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. 1. Ahose grappleconsisting of sections of tubes having jointed grappling-irons applied to them whereby the hose is graspedv evenly, substantially as described.
2. The grapple herein described, consisting of the parts A and B, pivoted together, and
provided at their ends with curved pieces D- D, and having handle a and link a, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In combination with the grapple A B,
