Description

' G. PAIR, Clamp for Elevating Tubing in Oil-Wells.
No. 221,958. Patented Nov. 25,1879.
FIGl
&
8 7-5? W fa UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. FAIR, OF KAYLOB CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS FOR ELEVATING TUBING IN OIL-WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,958, dated November 25, 1879 application filed December 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, GEORGE W. FAIR, of Kaylor City, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Elevating Tubing in Oil-Wells and I do hereby declare that the following. is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention consists in a combination, with the jaws of the clamp, of a link of peculiar form, and in the construction of said jaws and arrangement of the suspending-links, all of which will be hereinafter fully explained.
In the. drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my device complete. Fig. 2 is the same with the suspending-links removed and the end of the link raised. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of same, and Fig. 4 shows the links.
a a/ are the jaws, hinged together at M, so that they may be opened to receive the tube 1). Each jaw is provided with a suitable lug,
c, on its side for holding thesuspendinglinks 61;
The object in placing the suspending-links on the sides of the clamp is that the jaws may be opened when desired without the necessity of throwing both of said links 0d the elevatmit of the insertion of the stem of the tube.
The jaws on their upper edges are recessed at e'to receive the head of the link f, which fits snugly therein, and flush with the inner circumference of the tube-opening.
The jaw a has a suitable opening, a near its outer end in which the link f is held. Thejaw a is recessed or mortised at a ,in'to which mortise the end of the link f enters, when the latter is thrown up for the purpose of fastening the jaws together, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The fastening-link f is provided with the enlarged end f, which fits snugly in the recess e, and it has its upper end beveled so that it is flush with the upper edges of the jaws, and it has its outer end recessed or made concave, so that it will fit snugly against the side of the tube 1).
The operation of the device is very simple and easily understood. The clamp is placed around the tube 1) at a point sufficient distance below the thimble b to permit the turning overof the link f, so as to bring the head f into the recess 6.
After the jaws have been passed around the tube, they are brought together and the link turned up over the ends of both, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, bringing the head f into the.
recess 6, after which the clamp is raised to the thimble which rests on the upper surface of the jaws and on the beveled upper side of the head f, as shown in Fig. 1. it
With this device tubing may be handled with greater ease and rapidity than can be done by devices of ordinary construction.
When a joint of tubing is raised or lowered and it is desired to remove the clamp, the lower end of the joint is placed on the ground or on the top of the tubing-column, or on any other suitable rest, the rope is slackened and the jaws drop down below the thimble b, as shown in Fig. 2, after which the link f is thrown back off the ends of the jaws, and the latter are opened and removed without the necessity of removing from the elevatinghook and ropes one or the other of the elevating-links d..
The links d are made of sufiicient length, that they will, without being removed from the elevating -rope and hook, permit the movement of the clamp on the tube 1), a sufficient distance below the thimble b to allow the link f to be turned out of or into the recess e, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, with the jaws 66 or, having the recess 0 formed on their upper edges next the tube-opening, of the linkf having the beveled head f, and secured in the outer end of the jaw a, with capability of being turned up my own I affix my signature inpresence of two over the closed ends of both of said jaws, s0 witnesses. V that the head will dro into the recess 0 T flush with the u 1:per edges of the jaws and im GEORGE FAIR mediately below the head or thimble of the Witnesses: v tube 11, substantially as set forth. WM. J. GURRAN,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as Z. NEWELL.
