To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HAIGnfr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spartanburg, in the county of Spartanburg and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wrench, more particularly to one of that type known in the art as a pipe chain-wrench, for turning or holding pipe, pipe fittings, bars, shafts, etc.; and comprises a jaw having a serrated concave surface placed on the object to be turned or held against rotation, and a handle pivoted to the jaw and provided with a hook or claw to which is attached the free end of a flexible connection secured to the jaw and adapted to be passed around the object to be rotated l or held in fixed position.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of the wrench in operative position. Fig. 2 is a view looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a top view, and Fig. 4 a bottom view of the wrench.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views.
l indicates the jaw of the wrench, to which is connected, by means of a pivot pin 3, a handle 2, the parts being thus permitted to move relatively to each other. The jaw 1 is pref erably formed of two plates 4 and 5 rigidly connected by the pivot pin 3 and a second pin 6 riveted to the outside ofthe plates. T c maintain the plates a suitable distance apart, the pins are reduced in diameter at their ends where they pass through the plates, The lower edges of the plates are substantially concave and serrated as shown. The serrations 7 extend from one side of the jaw to the other. Pivotally attached to the pin 6 is a shackle 8 to which a chain or other flexible connection 9 for passing around the pipe or other object is fastened.
The lower end of the handle 2 is placed between the plates 4 and 5 ofthe jaw 1 and pivoted thereto, Near the pivotal end, and on the side opposite the shackle, is a claw or hook ll extending upwardly at an angle to the handle 2 and centrally slotted, see Fig. l, for the insertion of one of the links of the chain 9 after it has been passed around the object to be operated on. The handle 2, where it is joined by the hook or claw 11, is provided on each side with a shoulder 12 which engages the jaw when the handle is lowered to receive the chain, and prevents it from :falling between the plates 4 and 5 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The pins 3 and 6 are placed relatively in the direction of the strain exerted in the use of the wrench.
In the operation of my invention, thejaw l is placed against a pipe, shaft or other object and the handle 2 allowed t0 fall until its shoulders 12 strike against the aw. The claw or hook 11 will then be in its lowest position. The chain is then passed around the pipe or other object and drawn tightly, one link of the chain being thereafter attached to the hook or claw l-l. On moving the handle in the proper direction, the chain and jaw will be drawn so tightly around the pipe that it cannot slip, owing to the serrations on the jaw, with the result that the pipe will-be rotated. Moving the handle in the opposite direction leosens the chain, and carries the wrench back to its first position in readiness to again engage and move the pipe.
`While I have shown the jaw formed of two plates, it is to be understood that a greater number may be used if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a wrench of thefcharacter described, the combination of a jaw comprising two separate plates rigidly connected by spacing pins 3 and 6 also serving as pivots and placed in the direction of strain as described, the lower or inner edges of said plates being concave and serrated throughout their entire length; a handle placed between the said two plates and pivoted thereto by the pin 3, said handle having near its pivotal end a centrally-slotted hook provided with shoulders or stops 12 to limit the movement of the handle; a shackle placed between the said plates and pivoted thereto by the pin 6, and a linked chain attached at one end to said shackle and adapted at one of its links to be placed and retained within said centrally-slotted hook, substantially as set forth.
