WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 5, 1910. Serial No. 570,237.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat we, ALFRED PETERSON and RICHARD J. UNEILL, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will onable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
()ur invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and in particular pipe wrenches.
The invention consists essentially in form ing the extremity of the body portion of the tool V-shaped, and connecting therewith a chain or other flexible device having a rotary gripping device pivoted thereon. In each of the jaws of the body portion of the tool is also pivoted a gripping device which engages the pipe or device to be rotated. By virtue of the rotary mounting of the gripping devices they are allowed to turn in such a manner as to act as cams in gripping an article to which they are applied. In other words, the more pressure or force that is applied to the wrench, the greater will be the gripping power or action of the gripping device. In use the V-shaped extremity of the body portion of the wrench receives the pipe and the chain or flexible device is passed around the device to be gripped and connected with the body portion of the tool, whereby when the wrench is turned, the r0 tary gripping devices bite into the pipe or article to be gripped, and firmly grasp the same.
Having briefly outlined our improved construction, we Will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating our improvement shown in connection with a pipe wrench of the chain order. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same looking in the direction of arrow 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 8, is a detail elevation of the gripping device.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate our improved gripping device which consists of a body, preferably square, in end view or when sectionized in a plane cutting its axis at right angles. The faces of this body are toothed as shown in Fig. 6, to increase their gripping capacity. It will be understood that our improvement is not limited to four faces, since it may consist of any desired number of faces, though a four-faced device is probably preferable. It is evident, however, that a device that has three faces would be operative, while more than four faces could be advantageously employed.
The device as illustrated in the drawing is provided, with a central opening 7 through which a pivot pin is passed when the device is secured in place upon the tool.
Referring first to the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, let the numeral 8 designate a chain whose construction for the most part is ordinarily composed of pairs of links 9 and 10, connected by pins 12, in the usual manner. Upon each of these pins is mounted one of our improved gripping devices 5 so that as the chain is passed around a pipe 13, a number of the gripping devices will engage the outer surface of the pipe in such relation as to give a powerful gripping action. As illustrated in the drawing, one eX- tremity of this chain is pivotally connected as shown at 14;, with a tool 15 having a shank 16 and two jaws 17 extending approximately at right angles to each other. As illustrated in the drawing each of these jaws is equipped with one of our improved gripping devices, whereby as the pipe 18 is placed between the two jaws, it is not only acted upon by the gripping device of the chain or flexible member 8, but is also grasped by the larger gripping device 5 carried by the jaws 17 of the tool. When it is desired to use this form of tool for turning a pipe 13, the latter is placed between the two jaws 17 of the tool, whereby the gripping devices 5 engage the outer surface of the pipe. The chain 8 is then passed around the pipe, and connected with a pin or hook 18 which is secured to the shank of the tool, the hook being mounted upon a bolt 19 secured by nuts 20. When this is done the shank 16 may be grasped by the operator, who may then easily turn the pipe 13 in either direction desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
1. The combination with a tool having Patented Oct. an, ion.
jaws adapted to receive a pipe or other article to be rotated, each of the jaws being equipped with a rotary gripping device having toothed gripping faces protruding beyond the aws, a chain having one extremity connected with the tool, gripping devices rotatably mounted at suitable intervals on the chain, and means mounted on the tool for securing the chain in operative relation with the tool after the chain has been passed around the pipe, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a tool having jaws adapted to receive a pipe, a chain connected at one extremity with the tool, rotary gripping devices mounted on the chain at suitable intervals and provided with toothed gripping faces protruding beyond the chain, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a tool having jaws extending at angles to each other and adapted to receive a pipe, each of the jaws being equipped with a rotary gripping device having gripping faces protruding for gripping purposes, and a chain connected at one extremity with the tool and gripping devices mounted on the chain at suitable intervals, substantially as described.
4:. The combination with a tool having jaws extending at angles to each other and adapted to receive a pipe, each of the jaws being equipped with a rotary gripping device having gripping faces protruding for gripping purposes, a flexible device connected at one extremity with the tool, and gripping devices mounted on the flexible device at suitable intervals, for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination with a tool having a V-shaped extremity forming jaws adapted to receive a pipe, each of the jaws being equipped with a rotary gripping device having gripping faces protruding for gripping purposes, and a chain connected at one extremity with the tool, and rotary gripping devices mounted on the chain at suitable intervals, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
