ATTACHMENT FOR SMOKING-PIPES.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT SPEIRS, a citizen oi' the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State oi New York, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a speciiication.

lThis invention relates to smoking pipes and more particularly to an attachment for corn-cob pipes, whereby the latter may be converted into a water pipe or hookah.

The obect of the invention is plug or c osure adapted to lit an opening in the bottom of a pipe formed by the removal of the corn-pith, said plug being provided with a tube forming a source of communication between the bowl oi' the pipe and a liquid containing catch basin or bulb so that when suction is applied to the stem of the pipe the smoke will pass through the water in said bulb and thus be relieved of nicotin and other impurities before passing to the mouth of the user.

A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.

Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.

In the accompanying' drawings forming a part ci' this specification Figure 1 is a side elevation of a corn-cob pipe provided with an attachment constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating a modified form of the invention.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.

The im roved device forming the subject matter oi) the present invention is principally designed for attachment to corn-cob pipes and by way of illustration is shown in connection with a corn-cob pipe of the ordinary construction in which 5 designates the body of the pipe, 6 the bowl and 7 the stem.

a depending extension 10, the side walls olI which are preferably inclined or tapered, as indicated at 11.

Surrounding the conical extension 10 oi' the plug is an annular band 12, preferably formed ol'l cork, rubber or other yieldable material and which serves to support a water containing catch basin or bulb 13.

The mouth of the bulb 13 is flared laterally at 14 for engagement with the adjacent inclined walls of the cork band 12, said [lange biting into the cork and thus serving to rctain the bulb in position on the plug.

Depending from the center of the plug 8 is a tube 15 having its upper end disposed flush with the flat surface 9 of the plug and its lower end submerged in the water in the catch basin 13, thereby to form a water seal and compel the smoke to pass through the liquid in the catch-basin before being delivered to the mouth of the user.

The center of the plug 8 is cored out to form an annular chamber 16, one wall of which is formed with a lateral opening 17 adapted to register with an opening 1S for the pipe stem so that when suction is applied to the stem 7, the smoke will be directed downwardly through the tube 15 and the nicotin or other impurities in the smoke deposited in the catch-basin 13.

Attention is here called to the lact that the suction from the stem 7 and vacuum chamber 16 has no direct connection with the burning tobacco in the bowl 6, the smoke being compelled to pass through the water in the bulb 13 before reaching the mouth of the user, as before stated.

In Fig. 3 of the drawings there is illustrated a modified form of the invention in which the plug 8 is substantially cylindrical in shape with its exterior walls at the lower away to form an annular recess for the reception of a ilexible packing strip 10', the depth of the annular recess being such that when the strip 10 is ositioned on the plug, the exterior walls of t 1e flexible strip will be disposed in vertical alinemcnt with the exterior walls of the plug or closure.

I/Vhile the attachment is principally designed for use in connection with corn-cob pipes it is obvious that the same may be used with equally good results in connection with any ordinary form of smoking pipe.

Havino thus described the invention what is claime is:-

1. A pipe having an opening in the bottom thereof, a plug forming a closure for said opening, a liquid containing catch-basin carried by the plug, and a tube forming a source of communication between the bowl of the pipe and the catch basin, and having its lower end submerged in the liquid in said catch-basin. A 2. A pipe having an opening formed in the bottom thereof, a plug forming a closure for said opening and provided with a central bore, a liquid containing catch-basin carried by the plug, and a tube spaced from the walls of the bore of the plug and forming a source of communication between the bowl of the pipe and the interior of the catchbasin, said tube having its lower end submerged in the liquid in said catch-basin.

A ni4 e havin r an o Jenin@` formed in the bottom thereof, a plug forming a closure for said opening and having a centrally disposed bore, a transparent liquid containing catchbasin carried by and depending from the plug, and a tube spaced from the walls of the bore to form an vintermediate chamber and having its upper end communicating with the bowl of the pipe and its lower end submerged in the liquid in the catch-basin.

4. A pipe having an opening formed in the bottom thereof, plug seated in said opening and provided wi h a depending extension, there being a centrallyT disposed bore formed in the plug one wall of which is provided with an opening adapted to register with the pipe stem opening, a ilexible packing secured to the extension of the plug, a liquid containing catch-basin engaging the'eXterior walls of the packing, and a tube spaced from the walls of the bore to form an intermediate chamber and having its upper end communicating with the bowl of the pipe and its lower end submerged in the liquid in the catch-basin.

5. A pipe having an opening formed in the bottom thereof, a plug seated in said opening and provided with a depending extension, the exterior walls of which are tapered, there being a longitudinal bore formed in the plug, a yieldable strip engaging the tapered walls of the extension, a liquid containing catchbasin depending from the plug and provided with a flange adaptedto engage the vieldable strip, and a tube having its intermediate portion spaced from the bore of the plug toform a chamber and its upper end communicating with the bowl and its lower end submerged in the liquid in the catch-basin.

An attachment for corn-cob pipes including a plug adapted to fit an opening in the bottom of the pipe and provided with a l longitudinal bore, a liquid containing catchbasin de )ending from one yend of the plug, and a tu e having its intermediate portion spaced from the walls of the bore and its lower end submerged in the liquid in said catch-basin- 7. An attachment for corn-cob pipes in cluding a plug adapted to enter an opening in the bottom of the pipe and having a centrallT disposed bore, one wall of which is provided with an opening communicating with said bore, a yieldable strip engaging the eX- terior walls of the bore, a liquid containing catch-basin bearing against the yieldable strip, and a tube having its upper portion disposed flush with the upper surface of the plug and its lower end submerged in the liquid in the catch-basin, the intermediate portion of the tube being spaced from the l walls of the bore to form an annular chamber.

8. An attachment for corn-cob pipes including a plug having its upper end provided with a ilat bearing surface and its lower end formed with an annular shoulder defining an extension, there being a bore formed in the center of the plug, a vieldable strip embracing the extension of the plug, a water containing catch-basin supported on the plug by frictional engagement with the yieldable l strip, a tube having its upper end vdisposed ush with the flat bearing surface of the plug and its lower end extended through the bore of the plug and submerged within the liquid in the catchfbasin, there being an opening formed in the plug and communicating with the bore.
