Description

dnled mes @sind Gemine.
Letters Patent No. 91,648, dated June 22, 1869.
IIISROVEMNT IN DOUBILE-ACTINGPUMPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent andl making part of the same.
'To all whom it mayicoucern;
Be it known that I, FRANCIS A MACKyof' Niles, in the county of Berrien, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new .anduseful Improvements in the Construction of DoublehActing Pumps; and Ido here- Vbydeclare that the following is a full and exact-de `scription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawingamaking a part of' this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation, with one side in section.
Figure 2, a plan.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the igures.
This pump is ofA that class known as double-acting, in which two cylinders and pistons, with water-ways, connected with a single induction and eduction-passage are employed.
The invention does not consist in any new features in the working-parts, but' rather in the special construction, in which wooden bodies areemployed with the metallic cylinders, and other parts bolted and clamped thereto; the object being to secure great cheapness and strength, and to supply such a nuinp for various places and purposes.
In the drawings- A A represent the cylinders, which are made of metal, with both ends open.
These cylinders -are simply clamped between the two wooden bodies B and C by screw-bolts, a a a a, having packing to make them tight v The nuts on lower end of bolts a, also clamp in place on the under side of C, a metallic watenpassage, D, with induction-tube b, extending down a suitable distance below.
This water-passage conductsthe water to openings c c, made through. C, into the cylinders A A.
This water-passage D may be dispensed with in wells already dug',
A metallic water-chamber, E, is also bolted on top of B, from which extends eduction-'tube d to the top of the well.
.A valve, j, is situated over opening fi.-
The body B consists simply of three or more layers, f f f, of wood, the exterior ones of which are entire or unbroken, while the inner one or ones have a large opening, g, cnt out of the centre, communicating at h h with the cylinders, and at t with the chamber EL The arrangement of the pistons G G, piston-rode k k', cross-bar H, and operating-lever I, and stulngboxes J J, is similar to those now in use.
The platform K is connected with C by straps l l,
the object being to properly support the pump below water at a ,suitable distance-from the bottom, and prevent mud and sediment from drawing into the pump- This I believe to be a new feature, and forms an important part of the construction.
I disclaim any of the operating-parts ofthe pump.`
The novelty in my case consists simply in the construction, consisting of the wooden bodies B C K, with the metallic part-s A, A, D, and E, bolted and clamped thereto in such a manner as to constitute a solid whole, thereby forming a pump of combined Wood iron, of exceeding cheapness and strength,
and not iable to' get ont of order, and can he used in a comi on well, or be attached to a tube-well.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desirel to secure .by Letters Patent, is-
l. `The body B, consisting of a series of wooden layers, f, and provided with an internal space, g, thel metallic chambers D E, wooden platform G, and metallic cylinders A A, combined together iu the man ner and for the purpose described.
2. The sub-platform K, between which and the platform G, is a free space, as arranged in relation to the other part-s of the described pump, substantially fas and for the purpose described.
Ip witness whereof, I` have hereunto signed my name, in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses. F. A. MACK.
Witnesses:
