PUMP.

Letters Patent No. 105,056, dated 4July 5, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. EADS, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Sand and Soil-Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters ,of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to pumps for raising sand or other subsoil out'of river beds or bottoms, for forming deep channels, orexcavations for foundations of bridgepiers, or other purposes.
The nature of this improvement is in the arrangement of a rising pipe or tube, in which an upward current of water is created, of sucient velocity to draw sand or soill into said pipe, and carry the same up in said pipe to be discharged at a proper point above.
To cause said upward current, I arrange a force-pipe,
' through which, by a'suitable pump, water is forced to a head-piece at the lower end of the rising-pipe, said head-piece is properly formed to deflect the incoming lnid, to create the upward current, as required.
To enable those skilled in these arts to make and use my said device, I will no w more fully describe the same,
' referring to the accompanying- Figure 1 as an elevation; to l Figure 2 as a sectional elevation; and to Figure 3 as a bottom plan, showing the arrangeient and connection of the pipes and head-piece in one of the forms iu which my said invention may be represented. v
I form thc head-piece of a body or housing, A, to which the force-pipe, B, connects by suitable joint and inlet-piece. The neck of the head-piece joins, by a screw or flange-joint, with the rising or discharge-pipe G at c. The lower end of the pipe Gis flared out somewhat conically, following the form of the housing A, and there is formed between the end of the pipe G and the housing an annular chamber, D, into which the water enters from the force-pipe B.
At the bottom of the housing A, I arrange a uut or joint piece, E, having aproper connection with the housing, as shown at c, and within said joint-piece I secure the nozzle or 'inlet-pipe, F. The nozzle F extends up a suitable distance into the end, c, of the pipe C, andT as the upper surface of the joint-piece E forms thcv bottom of the chambcr D, the fluid, as it passes out of this chamber, is deected to'an upward current, around the nozzle F, and passes up into the discharge-pipe C. By the upward current thus produced a vacuum is formed, whereby the eXterior fluid of the river,'iu which the head-piece is placed, is caused to enter the nozzle F, carrying with it sand or soil. Ihe stuft' thus raised is carried up the risingpipe U, and may be discharged at any convenient point.
The' .head-piece A, and its connecting-pipes, are lowered, as the excavation is carried on, to keep the nozzle F in proper proximity to the subsoil of the watercourse.
The current of water inthe forcepipe,B is made by a proper pump, giving a continual stream, the pump being located on a boat, barge, or platform above the water-level.
In order to regulate` the velocity of the current iu the rising-pipe C, in accordance with the weight and bulk of the sand or soil to be raised, the nozzle F counect-s by a screw-joint, f, with the joint-piece E, so that an operator may move the nozzle F up or down; then, owing to the conicality ofthe end c of the risingpipe, the opening between the nozzle and the' end c isv made smaller or larger, to increase or diminish the. ve-` locity of the upward current iu the discharge-pipe.
The nozzleF may be turned by a`proper Wrench, er1- gaging in notches on its lower edge. These notches are indicated invg.- 3.
' A further regulation of the current velocity may be achieved by moving the joint-piece, to thus raise or lower the bottom ot' the chamber D, and decrease or increase 'the water-way under the bottom edge oi' ends e.
.By the use ot' my said sand or soil-pump, a lift of any required height may be achieved, and the same is, therefore, applicable 4to the construction of deep excavations, where ordinary devices would be iuefiicient.
Having thus fully described my invention,
-The speciiic device shown and described, with ilar- -ing bottom and inclined sides7 as described, for the purpose set forth.
. JAS. B. EADS.
