A MPHOTO-UTHOGHAPHIC C0. N-KMSBQRNKS PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BEAN, OF HUDSON, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,025, dated December 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BEAN, of Hudson, in the county of Lenawee and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanyin'g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a pump, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which is a side elevation of my pump partly in section.
A represents a cylinder made of stone or glass, and having a pipe, B, inserted in its upper end. This pipe has packingo placed around its lower end, and the pipe and packing are inserted in the upper end of the cylinder. By this mode the pressure of the water tightens the packing as it rises, and is not liable to slough out. Around the cylinder A and pipe B is placed a casing, G, which is open on two sides from the lower end upward to a suitable distance above the upper end of the' cylinder.
By this device the piston-valve may be got at without removing either the cylinder or case of the pump; and after removing the pipe B and piston, the hand may readily be inserted in the cylinder for the purpose of removing anything which might'be drawn up into it from the bottom of the well or cistern. Between the pipe B and the case C is a space, I), as shown, which forms a ventilation to the well, and that is of great importance to the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the stone or glass cylinder A, inside movable pipe B, and outside case 0, all constructed as described, and formthe ventilating-space 12, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I .have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of August, 1872.v
